Reggae Musician Peetah Morgan of Morgan Heritage Dead at 46

Reggae musician Peter Anthony “Peetah” Morgan, frontman of the Grammy-winning band Morgan Heritage, has died. He was 46 years old.

Morgan, who formed a reggae group with his four siblings, died on Sunday, according to a statement his family shared on social media. The cause of death was not given.

“It is with sincere love that we share that our beloved husband, father, son and brother and lead singer of Morgan Heritage Peter Anthony Morgan has ascended today, February 25, 2024. Yes, come and save us from ourselves because love is the only way,” reads the press release.

It continued, “Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support, and we ask for your continued prayers as we go through this process. We also ask that you respect our privacy during this healing period. Thank you! The Morgan Family”

Morgan was the son of reggae musician Denroy Morgan, who died in 2022. He and his siblings Una, Roy “Gramps,” Nakhamyah “Lukes” and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” founded Morgan Heritage and released their debut album Miracle in 1994.

The group has released more than a dozen records over the years, and in 2016 won Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards for Strictly Roots.

After the release of their album Legacy In 2021, Morgan spoke about the lasting impact of Morgan Heritage in the biography section of the group’s website.

“This album gives listeners a chance to dive deep into what Morgan Heritage’s career has given humanity from our hearts and souls over the years,” he said. “It means a lot to us because we know how much people around the world love and appreciate what we do and this Legacy album, you’ll really understand why.”

Morgan’s death was mourned by stars like Ziggy Marley, who expressed his condolences to the Morgan family in the comments section of the Instagram statement.

The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, too he said on X that his heart was “heavy to learn of the death of Peeta Morgan of the world-famous Morgan legacy.”

“I send my deepest condolences to the Morgan family as they mourn this tremendous loss which is also a colossal loss to Jamaica and to Reggae music. Our country is grateful for his life and contribution and sharing his exceptional musical talent that touched each and every one of us,” Holness wrote. “I pray for peace and comfort for the family during this unimaginably difficult time.”
