Josh Hartnett is notoriously rude, and so is his wife Tamsin Egerton.

The actor and his longtime love are extremely private when it comes to their private lives. In the early 2000s, Hartnett was one of the most sought-after actors in the industry thanks to films like Pearl Harbor and Fall of black Hawk. But for more than a decade, he decided to withdraw from the limelight in order to maintain his mental health and build a happy family life.

“I was never great as a celebrity,” he said The Independent, adding that “being famous is a full-time job.”

He continued: “Paparazzi were chasing me, people were approaching me. You weren’t allowed to really be who you were. There was no time for family or friends or any of those normal things. A lot of actors have found a balance between work and private life, but it was difficult for me and I was really looking for it.”

He told the newspaper that he now spends most of his time at home with his wife and children. “It’s essential to my sanity,” he said.

After meeting on set, the couple began dating in 2012. Almost 10 years later, Hartnett and Egerton secretly tied the knot in November 2021. By then, they were also parents to three children. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in late 2015. They then welcomed two more children in 2017 and 2019, respectively, along with a fourth since then, though their children’s names have never been revealed.

Like her husband, Egerton is no stranger to the entertainment industry. Although she initially wanted to be a veterinarian, she began acting at a young age, joining a local theater group in England with her older sister.

“I’m a real animal lover,” she said in a 2011 interview The Independent. “I love animals of all shapes and sizes. At home we had guinea pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits – we had everything! But I decided I wanted to be an actress at the age of 11. I got an error and that was it.”

She also modeled as a teenager, but it wasn’t inspiring and she focused on acting instead. The decision paid off and at the age of 16 she got the main role in the film Taking care of mom with Maggie Smith.

Hartnett and Egerton first met on the set of their film Lovers in 2011. It’s unclear exactly when the couple started dating, although there were rumors of a romance until 2012 when the two were seen together. However, they confirmed their relationship only the following year.

In the 2015 interview Marie Claire UK, the actress opened up about her personal style, admitting that she often enjoys borrowing from Hartnett’s wardrobe.

“I’m wearing my boyfriend’s clothes,” she told the magazine. “She has an amazing range of cashmere sweaters, which I often steal. His Saint Laurent shrunk in the wash and now fits me perfectly.”

She then explained that Hartnett was more than happy to share: “He said, ‘That was my favorite sweater. Now that’s your favorite sweater.’ ”

She and Hartnett have four children

After dating for three years, PEOPLE confirmed that the couple were expecting their first child together in July 2015. The couple welcomed a daughter in London later that year.

During an appearance on April 2016 Living with Kelly and Michaelthe Oppenheimer the actor gushed about his then newborn. “She is the apple of my eye. She is perfect in every way,” he told the presenters. “It puts things in a whole new perspective.”

In 2016 vanity fair Party for the Oscars, Egerton announced she’s expecting again, showing off her baby bump in a long-sleeved black dress. The couple had their second child in 2017. In 2019, they quietly welcomed their third baby.

More than a year later, Hartnett confirmed the birth of his third child in an interview with Mr. Porter. “What I’m most proud of is that I’m a father of three and I have a good relationship with my partner and a great family life and I can still work well and, as I’ve gotten older, the characters have become more interesting,” he said.

It wasn’t until years later that Harnett revealed that at some point in 2019, he and Egerton welcomed their fourth child. Speaking with Golden derby on the red carpet at the 2024 SAG Awards, answered a question about his sudden surge in popularity online.

“I have four children, I live in the country. I’m busy either working or taking care of them, but thank you. That’s really kind,” he said.

He lives in England with Hartnett

Born and raised in Minnesota, Hartnett has never been shy about wanting to live away from the limelight. Shortly after becoming famous, he returned to his hometown of St. Paul, talking Huffington Post, “I think [Hollywood] it can be an unhealthy environment.”

His attitude has not changed, and the actor now lives in Surrey, England. “My partner is English,” he explained in the 2020 interview Diversity. “When we started having kids, she wanted to be around her family, so we’re here a lot of the time to make that happen.”

“We also belong in the United States, and we go back and forth,” he added.

At the 2018 British Independent Film Awards, Hartnett confirmed that his two eldest children were both born in London. “I like it here,” he said. “I spent 22 years living in New York, and London is very much like New York … The city has such great cultural facilities, it’s a fun place.”

Although Hartnett travels a lot for work, his priority is spending time with his family. Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment in May 2021, he explained: “I started doing smaller films, [since they] he didn’t often take me away from the children.”

Even before the outbreak of the pandemic, he said Mr. Porter that he took “a lot of time off first of all to be a dad”.

“We were trying to keep it [the kids] occupied as best we can,” he told the magazine about parenting three children under the age of 5 during quarantine. “But it’s a lot of work and it takes up all day for both of us, and in the end, all we want to do is reach for a bottle of wine and go to sleep.”

She and Hartnett secretly married in 2021

After nearly a decade together, Hartnett and Egerton married in November 2021. That same month, Egerton shared a photo on Instagram showing her wearing two bands on her ring finger.

“It’s been an amazing week and I can safely say that we are all happily exhausted,” she wrote, explaining that there were several birthdays in November, including her own. “Anyway, this is me having a special birthday with my childless man.”

Despite this subtle hint, the couple kept their wedding a secret for several months. In March 2022, PEOPLE confirmed the news it first reported Sun.

According to the British outlet, the couple said “I do” in London at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in front of a handful of close friends and family.

She wasn’t looking at his Black mirror episode

After a four-year break, the 6th season Black mirror premiering on Netflix in June 2023 with a star-studded cast including Hartnett. The actor starred in the third episode, “Beyond The Sea”, alongside Aaron Paul and Kate Mara.

While fans reacted with predictable heartache, they also praised the performances, but according to Hartnett, there’s one person who hasn’t seen his work on the hit series.

“My wife has already told me that she won’t watch it,” he said in an interview for ET Canada on the eve of the premiere. “She asked me what it was about when I read it right away. And she said, ‘No, I’m not going to watch it,'” he explained. “She can’t separate herself from the party where she sees it on a visceral level. So, I get that. I totally understand that.”

He told the outlet that Egerton is a fan black mirror, adding, “Eventually she’s going to look at it and then she’s going to be mad at me.”

They keep their lives private

Despite their celebrity status, the couple has taken pains to maintain their privacy. Hartnett has no social media and rarely talks to reporters about his private life.

“I think if you spend too much time drawing people’s attention to your personal life, you lose ownership of it,” the actor said USA Today 2015. “That’s why I make sure my life is mine.”

In his interview with mr porter, he talked about prioritizing family over a great career. “I decided to have a life. Let me put that first. That was always my goal,” he said.

He went on to say, “I don’t know what the possibilities of my life could have been if I had chosen different routes, but I will say that if I gave in completely to the allure of Hollywood, I know I wouldn’t have a happy life. I feel that very strongly.”

Egerton has the same strong family values. “I enjoy being at home and I’m a complete nester,” she told Daily mail in 2013. Although she documents part of her private life on Instagram, she kept photos of their children to a minimum.

The couple never revealed their children’s names, and according to Hartnett, the little ones don’t know who their parents are. “I want them to be as unadulterated as possible when they grow up. I don’t want them to have any knowledge of what we do,” he said on the BIFA 2018 red carpet. “It’s nice that they’re just kids, having a good life.”

In July 2023, Egerton supported Hartnett at the London premiere of his film Oppenheimer. The mum-of-three glowed in a floral dress, while the actor looked effortlessly handsome in a charcoal suit.
