Reginae Carter has always had an eye for style.
“I was stealing my mother’s clothes,” the 24-year-old TV personality, author and fashion designer told PEOPLE. “Mom used to ask, ‘Why are you in my closet?’ I said, ‘I’m going to school fly.’”
Fans have been following her bold fashion and beauty moves (“I’ve always been extra – but a good extra! That’s who I am,” she says) ever since she Growing Up Hip-Hop: Atlanta days. It’s one of the many attributes that made Carter the perfect candidate to front the NYX Mon-Stars Halloween NYX Professional Makeup campaign with Landon Barker and other rising stars.
For this, the makeup brand and Universal Studios teamed up to give a new image to the iconic and beloved monsters. Carter took on the role of the “Mumi Twins” alongside model Sydney Bell. Meanwhile, Barker starred as “The Werewolf,” while up-and-comers Phoenix Brown and Grace McKagan appeared as “Bride of Frankie” and “Draculah.”
Ahead of a party to celebrate the campaign (hosted by Carter and featuring appearances by Barker and Lil Wayne — Reginae’s dad!), PEOPLE caught up with the star to discuss the big partnership, her beauty routine and more.

Carter sat with her hair and makeup (the latter done by special effects makeup artist Mimi Choi) for about seven hours to transform into a mummy — an experience she says was worth the wait.
“Working with NYX was great fun. I had a lot going on,” she says of the intricate look created using NYX Professional Makeup’s Ultimate Shadow Palette in Warm Neutrals and Spiky Fringe Jumbo Lash on her eyes, Lip Lingerie XXL Matte Liquid Lipstick in Knockout for her lips and her teeth lined with Jumbo Eye Pencil in milk color and Epic Ink Liner in black color. “Nobody could tell me I wasn’t a mummy. I felt myself.”
She smiles and adds: “We have to play with makeup. Who doesn’t love makeup?” Carter certainly has, and if you’re one of the 7 million people who follow her on Instagram, you know how much.

It’s something he gets from his mom and Toya & Reginae actress, Toya Johnson. “I always automatically knew about glam from her. She is a glamorous girl. So I’ve always been a girl.”
Carter has a confession to make, though: She and her mom are makeup novices. But, Carter says, she learns tips and tricks from her makeup experts, friends and social media. “I love watching anything with hair and makeup on TikTok [because] I want to learn how [to do my makeup].”

The boost in confidence prompted Carter not to panic when her makeup artist canceled at the last minute. “I said, ‘You know what? NYX just sent me all this stuff. I’m about to make a face!’ That was the first time I used concealer on my face. all me [applied] it was a bit of blush and a bit of highlighter, and that was it thing. And I was really proud of myself. I called my mom and everything.”

While she’s still figuring it out, there’s one category she loves above all else: lips.
“My mom actually used to say when I was about six, seven years old ‘Nae, why do you want your lips to shine like that?’ I couldn’t wear red. My mom said, ‘No’. But I could wear fun dark colors. Now I just love my sweet lip.”

NYX Professional Makeup offers some of her favorites. “I love all their lipsticks,” she says.
Carter adds that she’s “big on skin,” and as such, she makes sure her routine of not getting ready after a day of makeup is on point. She especially had fun documenting herself removing her makeup after shooting the Halloween campaign. “I was tired, but I was making all these TikTok calls to my friends, and they were like, ‘What did you do to your face?’ It was fun.”

Carter is still in post-campaign celebratory style, and he feels right in November, when he will toast his landmark 25th birthday. Her goals, she says, include “staying healthy. That’s my number one, because there’s so much going on in this world and I keep a lot of energy around me. I just want to be better than myself — and get these coins.”
As for her beauty philosophy, Carter says, it’s about “just confidence. I love the fact that I can love myself. And whatever I add, I just want to add. I know that beauty is me, I don’t need to add anything to be beautiful. I just chose it because it’s fun.”
