Robert De Niro Blasts Trump in Gotham Awards Speech, Claims Studio Tried to ‘Cut Out’ the Comments

Robert De Niro claims his remarks about former President Donald Trump were almost cut from his award speech without his permission.

De Niro, 80, took the stage at the 2023 Gotham Awards held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York on Monday to present the series’ historic icon and creator a tribute to his film Killers of the Flower Moon.

During his speech, the actor paused and told the audience that he found out that part of his speech had been taken off the teleprompter and started reading from his phone instead.

“I just want to say one thing: the beginning of my speech was edited, cut. I didn’t know about that. And I want to read it,” De Niro said.

“Thank you. History is no longer history. Truth is not truth. Even facts are replaced by alternative facts and fueled by conspiracy theories and ugliness. In Florida, young students are taught that slaves develop skills that can be applied to their personal benefit.”

“The entertainment industry is not immune to this vicious disease,” he continued. “Duke, John Wayne, famously said of the Native Americans, ‘I don’t feel we were wrong to take this great land from them. There were a lot of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.’ ”

De Niro also criticized Trump and seemed to imply that Apple, the studio that produced him Killers of the Flower Moonwas responsible for editing that part of his speech.

Representatives for the Gotham Awards and Apple did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

“The former president lied to us more than 30,000 times during his four years in office, and he’s keeping up with his current campaign of revenge,” De Niro said of Trump, 77, in his speech. “But for all his lies, he cannot hide his soul. He attacks the weak, destroys the gifts of nature and shows disrespect, for example by using Pocahontas as a slander.”

De Niro, who has been outspoken about Trump in the past, received applause from the audience after repeating “that they set it all up,” before introducing his Killers Flower Moon costars with the award of the night.

“So I’ll say those things, but Apple, and thank them and all that, Gotham, blah, blah, blah, Apple — I don’t feel like I’m thanking them at all for what they’ve done,” he added. . “How dare they actually do that.”
