In 1966, Laver, who was 27 at the time, married Mary Benson in San Rafael, California. She was a three-parent divorcee and native Illinoisan by the name of Mary Shelby Peterson. In 1960, he won his first major singles victory at the Australian Championships, defeating fellow Australian Neale Fraser in a five-set final after battling back from two sets down and denying Fraser a championship point in the fourth set.
