Rohit Sardana was a well-known Indian journalist and television personality who died of a heart attack on April 30, 2021, a week after contracting Covid. Known for his lighthearted and direct style, Sardana hosted many popular television shows, including Zee News’ Taal Thok Ke and Aaj Tak’s Dangal.

Rohit Sadhana was born on Saturday, September 22, 1979 (aged 41 at the time of his death) in Kurukshetra, Haryana. He went to Gita Niketan Awasiya Vidyalaya School, Kurukshetra. After completing his schooling, he joined Guru Jambeshwar University of Technology, Hisar, Haryana, for his Masters in Mass Communication.

While Rohit was pursuing his Masters in Mass Communication at Gurujambeshwar Technological University, Hisar, he moved to Delhi for an internship at ETV Network and got a job offer in his final semester. Previously, he worked as an announcer at All India Radio. Later, he worked as a video editor for the Japanese team for five months. Soon, Sadhana started hosting the 10 pm briefing at ETV Network. After working at ETV Network for nearly a year, Sadhana left the network in 2003. It was reported that he left ETV with a monthly salary of Rs 72,000. Between 2003 and 2004, he worked as an assistant producer at Sahara Samay. In 2004, Rohit Sadhana joined Zee News and worked in various capacities like executive editor, anchor, news presenter and host. While working at Zee News, he became popular for hosting “Taal Thok Ke”, a show that focused on contemporary issues in India. He also hosted many cricket-based shows on Zee News and covered many popular cricket-based events, including the ICC World Cup. In 2017, he left Zee News to join Aaj Tak, where he hosted many prime-time shows, including the debate show Dangal.

In November 2017, a large number of Muslim protesters led by the Shia Muslim organization Anjuman-e-Imamia surrounded the India Today and Aaj Tak buildings in Bangalore in retaliation for derogatory tweets posted by Rohit Sadhana. On November 16, 2017, Sadhana posted a tweet questioning why the title of “sexy” was only used after Hindu goddesses and not other religious figures, but also for women in Islam and Christianity, including the Prophet Muhammad’s wife Ayesha, daughter Fatima and Jesus Christ’s mother Mary. After Sadhana’s tweet, a series of protests broke out across the country, demanding strict action against the journalist.

On April 30, 2021, 41-year-old Rohit Sadhana died of cardiac arrest while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Noida. Earlier, he had tested positive for COVID-19. On April 29, 2021, after his condition worsened, he was rushed to Metro Multispecialty Hospital in Noida and died the next morning while receiving treatment. On April 24, 2021, Sadhana tweeted that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Before announcing the news of Rohit’s death, India Today Group first informed Rohit’s family before they made the news public. Later, Zee News head Sudhir Chaudhary tweeted the news of Sadhana’s death. In his tweet, Sudhir Chaudhary wrote that he could not imagine that the virus would take the lives of people close to him.

While confirming the news on Aaj Tak that Sardana is no more, Chitra Tripathi had a sudden thought on the show.
Facts/Trivia
- Before joining ETV, Rohit Sadhana underwent five months of anchor training in Hyderabad; a Japanese team trained him as an anchor in Hyderabad.
- During his internship at ETV Network, he received only a stipend of Rs 3,200. In an interview, Sadhana said he had to borrow Rs 5,500 from his father every month to survive in Delhi.
- He learned Gujarati in order to cover the 2002 Gujarat Assembly elections.
- Interestingly, Sadhana has never played cricket but he hosts many cricket-themed shows on Zee News.
