Police are now investigating whether Russia was behind the July fire after the Guardian and German broadcasters investigated.

A Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism spokesman told the newspaper: “We can confirm that officers from the Counter Terrorism Police are investigating an incident at a commercial premises in Midpoint Way, Minworth.

“On Monday, July 22, a package at the location caught fire. It was dealt with by staff and the local fire department at the time and there were no reports of injuries or significant damage.”

London Met is leading the investigation with the help of specialist officers from the West Midlands force.

The Guardian reported that it is not known whether the device arrived on a passenger or cargo plane and where it was destined.

A similar situation recently occurred in Leipzig, Germany, and investigators are now looking into whether the two are connected.

The device caught fire while it was being loaded onto the plane after it arrived from Lithuania.

The head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency said he blew up the plane to bring it down.

MI5 Director General Ken McCallum warned last week that Russia and Iran were on a “permanent mission to wreak havoc” on the streets of the UK.

His officers, he said, caught dozens of conspirators planning mass murders using bombs and guns.

It also comes after a “Russian spy” was charged with masterminding the arson attack – in the first plot led by the Wagner group on British soil.

Dylan Earl has been charged under the National Security Act 2023, which was passed last year to catch those secretly working for enemy states in the UK.

Four other men were charged, Paul English, Nii Mensah, Jake Reeves and Dmitrijus Paulauska.
