See Taraji P. Henson Sing ‘Push Da Button’ in Powerful New Trailer for The Color Purple

Fantasia Barrino learns the power of sisterhood in the latest trailer for Purple.

On Tuesday, Warner Bros. Pictures debuted a new take on the musical, which stars Barrino, 39, reprising her Broadway role as Celia, a woman longing to be reunited with her sister Nettie (played by Halle Bailey and Ciara in dual roles).

The trailer teases Celie as she receives encouragement from Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson), before Celie recalls her abusive marriage to Colman Domingo’s character, which resulted in Nettie and Celie’s separation.

Also in the trailer, Henson sings the spectacular song “Push Da Button.”

“A story of love and resilience, Purple is a story that spans decades about one woman’s journey to independence,” reads the synopsis. “Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds incredible strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.”

The new movie musical from director Blitz Bazawule and producers Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones comes more than three decades after Spielberg, 76, directed the 1985 film that earned Winfrey, 69, an Oscar nomination for her role as Sofia. which Danielle Brooks plays in the new movie.

“Every woman and man who was invisible, who felt unseen and unappreciated, this is their story.”

The new film, written by screenwriter Marcus Gardley, is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel and Broadway musical, which ran for 910 performances from December 1, 2005 to February 24, 2008.

The film also stars Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Deon Cole, Corey Hawkins, HER and more.

Purple it’s in theaters on December 25.
