Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello kept a huge amount of respect when writing about their breakup.
On Monday, September 30, Mendes appeared at Jay Shetty’s Deliberately podcast and opened up about how he survived his breakup with Cabello, 27, in the spotlight.
“Camila and I have done the best job of keeping our private little fire of love alive for each other,” the “Why Why Why” singer, 26, said.
“No matter how mentally strong you are, when millions of people are commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected, swayed and inspired,” he continued. “Wanting it because people want it or hating it because other people hate it. That’s just human.”
Mendes and Cabello announced their breakup in November 2021 and fueled short-lived rumors of a reconciliation in 2023. Since then, Mendes says he doesn’t “go on social media” to see what people have to say about his love life.

“I don’t see or care what people say about my love life or relationships… it’s too damaging to the relationship itself,” he said.
Then Shetty, 37, asked Mendes what they did to protect their relationship.
“Extreme honesty [and] over communication,” Mendes said, adding that they’ll text each other to clarify the situation when something may have gone wrong in an interview. “It immediately breaks any kind of assumption.”
Mendes and Cabello have also developed a level of “understanding” as “music-making” and “storytelling” celebrities.

“I don’t think either of us would cross the line — we have a deep respect for each other,” the “Nobody Knows” singer said.
When Shetty said it was “difficult” to have that perspective – Mendes assured that he was “happy” to be going through it with Cabello.
“She’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly understanding, considerate and caring,” he said. “So communicating with her is not difficult and that’s probably a big part of it.”

“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for each other as people is stronger than ever,” read a statement they both shared on their Instagram Stories. “We started our relationship as best friends and we will be best friends.”
In April 2023, the couple was spotted kissing while attending Coachella in Indio, California. The reunion appeared to be over until June 2023 when PEOPLE confirmed that Cabello was back on the dating scene.
During the performance at Call her dad in March, the singer of “Lipanjski mrak” spoke about the short-term reconciliation.
“It took less time for both of us to say, ‘This doesn’t look good and we don’t need to work so hard to make it work. It’s all good,'” she said. “I will always take care of him and love him. He is a really nice, good person.”
