Shocking moment Charles is heckled by Australian senator shouting ‘you are not my King’ with security forced to step in

THIS is the shocking moment an Australian senator pranked King Charles before security were forced to step in.

The interruption came in the middle of Charles, 75, making a landmark speech to the Australian parliament overnight UK time.

Charles received a 20-second standing ovation for his address and was just taking his seat when Senator Lidia Thorpe appeared in the hall.

She shouted “You are not our king” and “You destroyed our country”.

As security stood in the way to prevent her from approaching the king sitting next to Camille just 30 feet away, she called out to him, “This is not your country, you are not our king.”

The monarch shrugged off the awkward encounter and continued to smile as Thorpe was ignominiously led away by security.

She later reposted on her Instagram a caricature of the king made by Matt Chun, co-editor of the anti-imperialist publication The Sunday Paper.

Thorpe is featured in a caricature depicting a beheaded Charles with a crown lying beside him.

It reads: “You are not our king. You are not our sovereign.”

Senator Thorpe, 51, is an Australian Aboriginal independent politician and has been a Victorian senator since 2000.

She was once banned for life from a Melbourne strip club for shouting obscenities at a group of men.

Thorpe is filmed outside Maxine’s Gentleman’s Club, saying at one point that he is a “marked” man.

The senator said in a statement that the men singled her out and provoked her, disputing her position on indigenous issues.

On Monday, security took her out of the room after about 30 seconds.

Auntie Violet Sheridan, a senior Ngunnawal elder, spoke of her anger at the outburst, describing it as “disrespectful and rude”.

The King and Queen welcomed Canberra with a traditional ‘smoking ceremony’ and royal salute

She explained that she had been asked by the Australian Prime Minister and the Cabinet Office to give an official ‘Welcome to Country’ greeting to the King and Queen in Parliament and she was “honoured to do so”.

Aunt Violet, who is a highly respected spokesperson for Indigenous affairs, was pictured kissing the king on both cheeks in a friendly welcome.

She was sitting on the stage with the King and Queen when Thorpe performed her intervention.

She said: “It was fantastic until that incident. I thought she was disrespectful and overreacting. She does not speak for me or my family.

“I was on stage sitting right behind the Prime Minister and it absolutely terrified me. I didn’t expect that and I’m sure no one else did either.

Hopefully people will see it for what it is. A disposable idiot

“We are all very disappointed by it. Have it in the Great Hall? Disgusting. I’m so upset for her. He had waited so long to become king, he had been practicing for it all his life. He is our king, our sovereign, and he has cancer.

“I said to my husband, ‘I’m so sad for him.’ I was sitting next to him. I’m a very spiritual person and I feel really comfortable with him. I just felt it.

“He is a good man. He thanked me for the welcome. This is sad. He has cancer and that idiot, I’m sorry to say, went and did it. I felt so sad that he went all this way.

“I don’t want my grandchildren when Prince George becomes king and comes here and this happens to him. I hope we can sort this out before our next generation comes along.

“I hope people will see him for what he is. A disposable idiot.”

Senator Thorpe ‘banned’ access to strip club

A king-shouting senator was once banned for life from a Melbourne strip club for shouting obscenities at a group of men.

Thorpe is filmed outside Maxine’s Gentleman’s Club, saying at one point that he is a “marked” man.

The senator said in a statement that the men singled her out and provoked her, disputing her position on indigenous issues.

Maxine’s managing director, David Ross, wrote to Thorpe’s office to be banned from entering the premises for life.

He said the senator spent several hours at the site with a small group of friends who were there for a 50th birthday party.

Staff at the club claimed Thorpe approached a number of men and told them they had “stolen her country”.

Rosa said: “We can’t have things like that here, because we pride ourselves on being a harmonious melting pot of the local community.”

In a letter sent to Thorpe’s office on Monday, Ross said that after reviewing security footage and speaking with staff, the senator was “no longer welcome” at the club.

Asked if she was a monarchist, Aunt Violet said, “I’m something in between a monarch.

“But we had a vote on it and decided to keep it. He’s our king. He even said recently that it’s up to the Australian public – if they want to say yes, he’ll happily be our king, if they say no he’s still stepping aside.

“He’s got broad shoulders. That’s up to the Australian people.

“This is not really about him being the king. It is a matter of respect for the distinguished guest.

It is disgusting to show such utter disrespect to King Charles, who has traveled to Australia despite undergoing cancer treatment

Ralph Babet, United Australia party senator

“And what that woman did was disrespectful. That’s no way to resolve our differences. This just gave her publicity oxygen.

“This is about respect. Me and my family, we respect our king and our queen. She’s not doing it on our behalf.”

‘Bad behavior speaks for itself’

Former Tasmanian senator and monarchist Eric Abetz said Ms Thorpe’s behavior was “disgraceful” and “disrespectful”.

He said: “If someone did this to an elder individual, he would rightly have something to say as I do.

“Very bad form Senator. Bad behavior speaks for itself.

“In a free society, people are free to behave badly as long as it is not illegal.

“The senator would like to make a martyr of herself for her bad behavior, and I would personally deny her that pleasure.”

United Australia senator Ralph Babet demanded Thorpe apologize for harassing the king, who traveled to Australia amid a break from treatment for an unspecified cancer.

He said: “To show such utter disrespect to King Charles, who has traveled to Australia despite ongoing cancer treatment, is disgusting.

“Senator Thorpe has not only disgraced herself and the Australian Parliament, but every Australian man, woman and child.

“Senator Thorpe demanded an apology from King Charles, I would say that King Charles and the Australian people should demand an apology from Senator Thorpe.”

Her behavior today also attracted the attention of Nationals leader David Littleproud.

Lidia should reflect on her behavior… She must look at what she is doing and ask herself why she is doing it

He said: “Lydia Thorpe’s business model of making a scene to get attention is predictable, but now unfortunately she is just getting embarrassed.”

Liberal MP Jonno Duniam said: “Lidia Thorpe should represent all the people of Victoria, not a small section of the community,” he said.

“I don’t often give the Greens credit, they don’t agree with the crown, they don’t agree with the institution of the monarchy, but they didn’t charge the taxpayers to come to Canberra and make a scene.

“While Lidia Thorpe did. She stood, turned her back during the singing of the national anthem, shook her head during the speech, and then made a scene that won’t achieve anything for anyone.

“Lidia should think about her behavior… She needs to evaluate what she is doing and ask herself why she is doing it.”

Charles’ Australian tour

It comes after the royal couple began their trip by attending services at St Thomas’ Church in Sydney’s north.

Charles waved to the crowd as Camilla glowed in a pale green dress and straw hat.

A small crowd of excited locals who heard about the visit were detained by the police across the road – along with a handful of protesters.

But they were greeted by children who waved flags and screamed with delight after meeting the royal couple.

Charles flew 10,500 miles Down Under, becoming the first monarch to visit since 2011.

The trip includes entertainment at the Sydney Opera House and he will give a speech at Parliament House in Canberra.

During his trip, he will have a touching face-to-face conversation with two pioneers in cancer treatment.

Despite being treated for cancer, he will still have 36 engagements in eight days with Queen Camilla.

The trip also includes a state visit to Samoa in the South Pacific – where he will address the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
