Sigourney Weaver Gets Emotional at Venice Film Festival: 'I Just Play Women, and Women Are Strong'

Sigourney Weaver was emotional talking about her career at the Venice Film Festival.

The actress, 74, accepts the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during the event’s opening night in Venice, Italy.

During a press conference on Wednesday, August 28, the three-time Oscar nominee became emotional when a reporter thanked her for her powerful portrayals, particularly as Ellen Ripley in the 1979 sci-fi classic. Stranger.

“It’s true, I have so many women who come and thank me [for those roles]”, she said, joking that she needed her “vodka” as she opened a bottle of water, holding back tears.

Weaver explained that she always saw her character in Stranger movies as “part of every person” and not as a woman in the series.

“I’m inspired by what I see as a real woman. We didn’t really get what we deserved, and to me, women have always been so capable, and we’re all. So the idea that the movie world takes such a big slice of the pie and we were like this — I feel like [Alien producers Walter Hill and David Giler] I just loved strong women and I felt that women were strong,” she said.

“And that’s the funny thing. They always ask me why I play strong women, and I always say, that’s such a weird question, because I just play women. And women are strong and women don’t give up. You know why? We don’t have to do that.”
