Simone Biles Defends Letting Jonathan Owens Wear Her Olympic Gold Medal amid Online Criticism: 'Leave Us Alone'

Simone Biles is standing by her man again.

The 27-year-old Olympic champion gymnast’s husband Jonathan Owens came under fire again this week after he shared a photo of himself wearing the gold medal Biles and Team USA won at the Paris Olympics.

“Witness history every time you step on the mat 😍🔥,” wrote Owens, who posed alongside his wife in a photo posted on July 31. “Congratulations to the baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Wow! !!! 8 of them!!!!! I’m so grateful to see that ❤️💙.”

It was a sweet gesture of support in the eyes of many fans, but some in the comments criticized the football star for posing as if it was his victory. Kiera Breaugh even told Owens to “take off the medal” in a video that has garnered 2.1 million views on TikTok.

Biles didn’t like that. Responding to Breaugh in the comments, she explained that Owens wasn’t the only one who posed with her award. “It’s crazy that I put my medal on every member of my family and took pictures,” she wrote on Thursday, August 1, adding, “so never make assumptions. 🙄”

“It’s like you’re all so fucking pathetic,” she continued. “Leave us alone.”

For her part, Breaugh responded to Biles’ comments in a subsequent video shared on TikTok, saying she was “honored to be told to screw up by such a talented woman.”

“She put the medal on him,” Breaugh said. “I can’t really be mad if she told him that,”

“And you know what? Maybe I’m miserable. The most decorated gymnast of all time will call me miserable. I think that’s fine,” she added. “I think in comparison, of course, I’m not just miserable, but lazy, untalented and all the other things in the description. I’m definitely that in comparison. So it doesn’t bother me. It doesn’t bother me at all.”

“I like to watch [it] from an athlete’s perspective, because that’s how you would excel in any sport, it’s just being consistent and doing the same thing consistently well every day,” he continued. “You know what I mean? I love watching it and I love being out there and being a cheerleader.”

“When she won the Olympics, I was in college and we didn’t have NBC,” he said on Headquarters podcast back in December 2023. “We didn’t have Olympic channels, and we were inside [training] camp [in] end of July, beginning of August. Well, I don’t pay attention. I would never have a moment to watch [her compete].”

He also received criticism because in that same interview he claimed that he was the “catch” in their relationship.

Biles has been openly defending Owens ever since. “He never said I wasn’t a catch,” she clarified during an April 16 appearance on Call her dad podcast. “He said he’s a catch because he is. I’ve never met a man like him. A lot of people who meet him say, ‘Oh my God. I want a man like Jonathan.’ ”

The Ohio native also said the criticism hurt her. “One night I broke down and asked myself: ‘Why are you talking about my husband like this?’ Biles admitted, calling her husband “the sweetest guy who would do anything for anybody” in the interview.
