The UK’s secretive National Intelligence Service and Norway’s National Security Agency have agreed to deepen cooperation amid the Kremlin’s daily attempts to steal information from Western “secure facilities and meetings”.

The two agencies will share best practices in combating covert eavesdropping devices installed by hostile states such as Russia.

A source said it would involve some of the “most discreet and sensitive work” of British spies anywhere in the world.

They added: “Being on Russia’s doorstep, Norway knows all too well that it needs to outmaneuver Putin at his own game.”

The prime minister is in the far north ahead of a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force, the anti-Turkish defense pact of the Baltic and Nordic allies, on Tuesday.

Ahead of the ten-nation summit, Sir Keir received a high-level intelligence assessment at Haakonsvern Naval Base, the headquarters of the Norwegian Navy.

A Number 10 source said the harsh update covered “sophisticated undersea threats to energy, critical national infrastructure and homeland security”.

After the bunker briefing, a source close to the prime minister said he was “preoccupied with the threat posed by Russia and focused on protecting the UK and our allies from Putin’s reckless actions”.

With 930 miles of sea border and 125 miles of land bordering Russia, Norway bears the brunt of Russian wiretapping.

UK defense activities have trebled in the country from 2021, with more than 5,000 troops training and exercising there annually.

Four UK Carrier Strike Groups have also deployed to our ally Scandi over the past two years.

A government source said: “Norway is a natural partner for the UK, both in perspective and in a low-key, let’s-get-about-it approach, so it makes sense that some of our most discreet and sensitive work is done alongside them.”
