Sister Wives’ Meri Brown on the Biggest Misconception About Her — and Why It Made Her Fight for Her Marriage (Exclusive)

Meri Brown is setting the record straight about her commitment to her marriage to ex-husband Kody Brown.

The Sister wives star, 52, exclusively tells PEOPLE why choosing to fight for her marriage to Kody, 54, was a way to dispel falsehoods about her character and confidence.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about me personally, because people always tell me, ‘You don’t know what you’re worth. You have no value.’ Very derogatory [things] about me,” she says, explaining how her willingness to stay in a polygamous marriage has led some fans to question her self-esteem. “And it’s like, no, actually, I know what I’m worth, and I know what my worth is, and I know what my values ​​are.”

“That’s why I tried to save my marriage for so long. A lot of people look at it as if because I waited so long it means I don’t have confidence,” she continues.

Contrary to what others might think, Meri says her “confidence” allowed her to take the time to figure out her marriage.

“I think that’s a big, big misconception,” she adds. “I gave 100% my best. I did everything in my power. And if I had left a little earlier, the question in my head would always be: ‘Did I do everything I could?'”

Now that Meri is “very confident” she did “everything” she could do to the best of her ability, the TLC star says she’s “very at peace with the timing and how everything played out.”

In January, Meri and Kody publicly announced their split in a statement via Meri’s Instagram. In it, the owner of the bed and breakfast noted that she had “no animosity toward Kody.”

Mary’s marriage is not the only one Sister wives a split that has occurred in recent years. Christine Brown was the first to leave a polygamous marriage in November 2021. Janelle Brown also revealed that she split from Kody in 2022 during One on one conversations. Robyn Brown is the last sister wife to remain married to Kody.

In Sunday’s episode of the hit reality show, Meri recalled the early days of her marriage to the Brown family patriarch and the “disappointing” way they split.

“I know the person he was when we got married. I know we were a couple,” she said as moments from their 1990 wedding flashed on the screen.

Although she and Kody have drifted apart, Meri admitted that she is “proud of myself” and “the person that I am.”

She also admitted, “It’s just sad to me that he couldn’t see that there was value in, you know, three decades of history.”
