SNL Alum Bobby Moynihan Recalls Illness Making Him Vomit on Set ‘5 Seconds’ Before Sketch with Gerard Butler

Saturday night live Bobby Moynihan wasn’t just laughing.

Gerard Butler was unwittingly caught up in an embarrassing moment for the comic when Moynihan, now 46, fell ill during a lengthy live-action skit.

“Strange things started happening to me, I had diverticulosis, I was getting cramps,” he told Anthony Atamanuik of Wondery’s Don’t panic podcast. “So I was like, What happens if I have a seizure on live television and can’t speak? And then it happened and you just passed.”

In 2009, Moynihan dutifully took his place moments after he became seriously ill when Butler, now 54, was hosting. “I was really sick one night and I threw up in the bin and then you’re on live TV five seconds later… you learn to deal with it,” he said. “You learn to throw up in a litter box and then five seconds later you’re talking to Gerard Butler. It’s a real thing that happened. He was dressed as the Beast and I was dressed as Cogsworth. Oh…”

He announced on Instagram his decision to leave the comedy series after almost 10 years. “Last night Kenan Thompson, Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin and Pete Davidson carried me off that stage for the last time as a cast member,” he wrote of his final episode. “The fifth longest-serving cast member of all time. I’m very proud of that and my time there. I’m a big fan SNL. It always was. It always will be. Huge thanks to the best and most valuable cast and crew on television. I love them so much it’s stupid.”
