Jensen Ackles is offering fans of The Boys a new look at his bearded appearance as Soldier Boy in the show’s upcoming third season. Amazon Prime’s superhero/dark comedy series, developed by Eric Kripke and based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book of the same name, has quickly become one of the streaming platform’s most successful original programs following its premiere back in 2019. It tracks a team of vigilantes as they set out to take down the “Seven,” a notorious group of superheroes who abuse their powers. Fans of the actor are most familiar with his portrayal of Dean Winchester on the long-running Supernatural, a series also brought together by Kripke, and after Ackles’ shared the announcement of his casting prior to The Boys season 2, many have expressed their excitement over the pair’s reunion.
Ackles joins returning cast members Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, and Claudia Doumit in The Boys season 3, set to return on June 3, 2022. While details surrounding the new episodes remain under wraps, fans can expect to see Victoria Neuman’s storyline play an important role as her secret motives begin to influence the actions of The Boys. Homelander is also likely to become more manic, especially with the arrival of Soldier Boy, one superhero considered his equal in the comics. Ackles will play a parody of Captain America, coined as the original superhero, who became celebrated while fighting in World War II.
Now, Ackles is sharing throwback images of his bearded appearance as Soldier Boy with fans on Instagram. The actor posted two photos of himself, taken a year ago, that reveal his physical transformation for the role, as well as a photo of the comic’s version of his character. Back in January, Ackles discussed the process of getting the role and said that he was interested as soon as he read the material. He also explained how he worked hard to earn the part of Soldier Boy and how Eric Kripke was the one who first brought the role to his attention, something the show’s developer also talked about shortly after Ackles was casted. Kripke revealed that the series was initially looking at actors much older than Ackles but that their relationship post Supernatural led to a casual conversation in which he offered to send him the script.
With only a handful of months left until The Boys season 3 premieres, it will be interesting to see how much more of Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy will be revealed and what his role becomes as the series progresses. Considering that other behind-the-scenes photos of Soldier Boy reveal a more clean-cut version compared to that of the actor’s recent post, it is likely that the character goes through quite the development. If the brief flashes in the trailer are any indication, it looks like Solider Boy will become a big part of The Boys‘ latest season and fans can look forward to his introduction soon.
