The 63-year-old deviated from the general opinion and votes of the other judges, choosing to eliminate the contestant who was least expected to leave Strictly.

Last night Layton Williams, 29, and Angela Scanlon, 39, danced it out after they both fell to the bottom following the judges’ scores and public vote.
Angela and her dance partner, Carlos, were sent home as the judges voted three to one to save Layton and Nikita.
Shirley was the only judge who decided to support Angela and Carlos.
One fan took to X/Twitter and wrote: “Shirley’s voice would be for Angela & Carlos, her dancing was beautiful in my opinion but I think Layton’s was just a tad better.”
Another fan added: “Shirley wants to save Angela instead of Layton???”
A third fan wrote: “Layton is adorable and Shirley hates him and we all know why but neither he nor Angela should have been in the bottom two.”
A fourth fan wrote: “Don’t get me wrong I love Angela and Carlos but there is no way she was better than Layton. How can Shirley say she would save Angela when she was wrong??”
A fifth fan echoed: “Shirley! What’s her damn problem with Layton?? Like, be real, why don’t you save a better dancer and dance (love Angela btw).
“Hurry up on Dancing with the Stars and film Shirley, please get her off our hands.”
During her vote, Shirley said: “It’s always important to me when it’s ballroom and the dance is Latin, that it’s true to the dance, the time and the quality and I’d vote for Angela and Carlos.”
