She was educated at Greenway Modern School, New Delhi. After completing her studies, she left her studies to pursue her singing career. She received formal training in Indian classical music from Gautam Mukherjee.

In 2002, she married director and choreographer Bobby Khan. The marriage alienated Sunidhi from her family, who disowned her. Due to some differences in their relationship, Sunidhi and Bobby separated after a year of marriage. After she separated from Bobby, her family reconciled with her.
During this time, she was with Anu Kapoor and his wife Arunita. Sunidhi Chauhan later had a relationship with her childhood friend Hitesh Sonik. The two dated for two years and tied the knot on April 24, 2012.

It was during one such performance that she was discovered by the actress Tabassum. Tabassum had her sing live on her show “Tabassum Hit Parade”, Sunidhi’s family was advised to move to Mumbai.
When they moved to Mumbai, Tabassum introduced Sunidhi to Kalyanji Virji Shah and Anandji Virji Shah. Afterwards, she worked at Kayanji’s academy for several years and became the lead singer of his “Little Wonders” troupe. She made her Bollywood debut as a singer with the song “Ladki Deewani Dekho” from the film “Shastra (1996)”.
In the same year, she released her first album “Aira Gaira Nathu Khaira”.
She then worked as a background singer for two years. She had her breakthrough with the song “Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi” from the movie “Mast (1999)”.

She even received two Filmfare nominations for the song. She has sung many hit songs like “Mehboob Mere”, “Bumbro”, “Say Shava Shava”, “Ishq Samundar”, “Crazy Kiya Re”, “Desi Girl”, “Dilliwaali Girlfriend” and many more. She made her Marathi debut with the song “Kande Pohe” from the film “Sanai Choughade (2008)”. She made her Punjabi debut with the song “Muqabla” from the film “Pind Di Kudi (2004)”.

- Sonu Nigam recommended her name to music director Sandeep Chowtala, who directed the film Mast. It was the same film that gave her career her first break.
- She first met Bobby Khan (her ex-husband) while making the album “Pehla Nasha”.
- In 2006, she sang the English song “Reach Out” at the opening ceremony of the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.
