Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta, is the anti-hero in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Tenoch Huerta will play Namor, the first living mutant incarnation of the submarine. Huerta noted several differences between Namor’s personality in Wakanda Forever and his comic counterpart, preserving Namor’s identity as a mutant, which is consistent with Namor’s background in the comics. The biggest difference between the two characters is that in the comics, Namor rules Atlantis, but in the movie he commands the Talocan and is therefore “influenced by Central American culture and history”. Huerta is said to have noted how radically the character’s backstory has been altered, saying:

“You can take Atlantis from Greek mythology or modify it from a real civilization.”

Namor the Sub-Mariner has been around since 1939, although he has never appeared in a feature film. Following the assassination of noble king T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Wakanda is currently embroiled in two wars: one over Vibranium and one against Namor, according to a trailer shown at the comic screening.

The trailer also shows a huge wave crashing on Wakanda’s throne, and given that Namor is a submarine, it’s highly likely he’s the only one capable of doing so. In a future movie, Namor will be the ruler of Talocan, a nation currently suffering from T’Challa’s decision to open Wakanda to the rest of the world. Tenoch Huerta went on to say:

“This decision endangers Talocan. And Talocan must act in self-defence.”
