What you need to know about wedding dresses
Location of the place and time of year
Just like your wedding dress, when choosing a wedding dress, Sabatino says you need to consider the venue and the season — as well as the overall aesthetic of your celebration.
If you’re having an early spring shower and it’s a little too cold to wear something like the Reformation Zaire Dress or Princess Polly Mercier Strapless Mini Dress, you can always style it with a scarf or a classic cardigan.
Personal style
While you might feel the pull between trendy and timeless, Sabatino says to lean into your personal style and find something that feels like an extension of you, rather than something too bold or too confident. The best thing about finding clothes for the events leading up to your wedding is that you can have fun without the pressure of picking out your wedding dress again.
That being said, your wedding style may be different from your personal style. So before you start shopping for your wedding wardrobe, Lucas says to ask yourself: What kind of bride are you? “If you’re into a romantic aesthetic, lace or flowers can be beautiful,” she explains. “But if you prefer a modern and clean look, then something that’s more minimalistic and sleek would suit your style better.”
Versatility
While the obvious purpose of choosing a wedding dress is to wear it to a wedding, bridal stylist Francesca DiSpirito recommends looking at versatile dresses that you can wear again—whether to other events in the wedding season, on your honeymoon, or after the wedding.
Dress style
First and foremost, you want to choose a style of clothing that you feel comfortable in, as well as something that acts as an extension of your personality. But if you’re stuck on which style to go for, DiSpiritor says short or knee-length dresses are very popular hemlines for wedding dinners (and you can totally repurpose them as a late-night outfit change at your reception).
“When shopping for a shower, I also find that a lot of my brides lean toward A-line skirts,” she adds, noting that most brides want to lean toward more feminine styles in their bridal fashion.
Custom tailoring
Regardless of what you choose on your wedding day, Lucas says don’t settle for a piece that doesn’t fit you right. “Tailoring isn’t just important for your wedding dress, it can make all of your wedding looks look so much better, making you feel more confident for all of your weddings,” she notes.
