According to Prue Leith, too much frosting is death to desserts.
In an interview with Deliciousthe The Great British Baking Show judge and restaurateur revealed what she believes to be “the biggest mistake Americans make when baking.”
First, she was asked about the main differences between UK and US bakers. Leith, 84, noted that Americans “like a bit more sugar than” people in the UK and tend to add more icing than British bakers. “We’d put a blob of frosting and you’d put an inch of frosting,” she said.

Multi-hyphenate — who’s judging right now The Great American Baking Show on Roku — clarified that “too much frosting and too much sugar actually spoils cakes.”

“It makes it hard to eat a big slice because it is [a] sugar overload,” Leith said Delicious. “You can taste almonds or strawberries or any flavor that’s better if it’s not loaded with sugar.”
Leith and fellow judge Paul Hollywood previously spoke about their likes and dislikes when it comes to American cuisine during an episode of PEOPLE at 10 ahead of the second season premiere of their US series. Hollywood, 58, said he was shocked by the size of the portions people get in America.

“I’ve never seen anything so big!” the celebrity chef told PEOPLE. “In the United States, the starter size is like a buffet in the United Kingdom, and the main course would feed a family for a month.”

Meanwhile, Leith had only good things to say. “I used to be a fan of America. I love Americans. They are so open and friendly,” says Leith. “They’re not embarrassed to be a little over the top.”
