The Umbrella Academy: Learn More About the Comic Books by Gerard Way That Inspired the Netflix Show

It’s a bittersweet time for fans of the Netflix hit Umbrella Academy — the Hargreeves family finally say goodbye in the show’s final season. The fourth season of the superhero TV series arrived on Netflix on August 8. Following a group of adopted siblings with superhuman abilities, the series has gained a devoted following since it first launched in 2019. It stars Elliot Page as Viktor/White Violin, Tom Hopper as Luther/Spaceboy, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison/Rumor, Justin H. Min as Ben/Horror, Robert Sheehan as Klaus/Séance, Aidan Gallagher as Five/Boy and David Castañeda as Diego/Kraken. Together, the Hargreeves siblings have traveled for decades, averted apocalypses, and survived too many near-death experiences to count. And it all started as a comic book series of the same name, by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way.

Initially a limited run of six issues, Umbrella Academy it was eventually expanded into multiple series for Dark Horse Comics (and conveniently collected into multiple volumes). Umbrella Academy it also inspired a spinoff series Stories from the Umbrella Academyas well as short stories within the same universe. “I haven’t seen anything like that in comics Umbrella Academy”, said Way Rolling Stone comics in 2019. “I’ve seen a lot of things that tie into continuity that’s been going on for 50 years and stories that have been going on for that long, but I haven’t seen anything that throws the reader right into the end and pulls them right into the good stuff.”

Each brother struggles in his own way – Rumor has lost her powers, White Violin is bedridden after a severe injury, and Spaceboy is nearly catatonic. It is revealed that the Boy, however, may have answers to a series of mysterious massacres, throughout the next six issues of the comic, collected in this volume.
