The US mission in India processed one million visas in 2023
The US Mission in India not only met, but exceeded its goal of processing one million nonimmigrant visa applications in 2023. They have already processed more cases than in 2022 and are processing almost 20% more claims compared to the period before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.
Last year, more than 1.2 million Indians visited the United States, marking it as one of the world’s strongest travel connections. Indians now account for more than 10% of global visa applications, including 20% for student visas and 65% for employment visas. The United States sees this growth as positive.
In a joint statement by Prime Minister Modi and President Biden during the President’s recent visit to India, the United States and India share a “close and enduring” partnership. Improved visa processing is just one example of the US Mission in India’s ongoing commitment to strengthening that partnership.
Experience the friendship between the US and India first hand
US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti said, “Our partnership with India is one of the most important bilateral relationships of the United States, and indeed one of the most important relationships in the world. The bonds between our people are stronger than ever, and we will continue our record visa work in the coming months to provide as many Indian applicants as possible the opportunity to travel to the United States and experience firsthand the American-Indian friendship.”
Demand for US visas exceeds expectations in India
Recognizing the increase in US visa applications, the United States has made significant investments in doing business in India. Over the past year, the Mission has increased its workforce to process more visa applications. In addition, significant upgrades were made to existing facilities, including the US Consulate in Chennai, and a new consulate building was inaugurated in Hyderabad.
Furthermore, the Mission has also implemented strategies to increase efficiency. These include expanding interview waiver rights to cover new visa categories and the use of telecommuting to allow staff from various locations around the world to assist in Indian visa processing. In the coming months, the Mission intends to launch a pilot program for qualified H&L category work visa applicants, allowing them to renew their visas in the country.
