Third man arrested over Christmas Day ‘murder’ of dad, 37, who was hit & killed by car outside pub as cops launch probe

Police have arrested a third person on suspicion of murder after a father died when he was hit by a car on Christmas Day.

Kirk Marsden, 37, was hit by a Toyota Land Cruiser outside the Gate bar in Moorgate Street, Blackburn, Lancashire on Wednesday, where he suffered serious injuries.

He died on Boxing Day morning at the Royal Preston Hospital.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody, Lancashire Police said.

Police earlier arrested a 58-year-old man of no fixed address and a 31-year-old man from Blackburn – both on suspicion of murder.

The 35-year-old is still in custody, and the 58-year-old was released on parole.

Chief Inspector Bryony Midgley, from Lancashire Police’s Major Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts continue to be with Kirk’s family and loved ones at this extremely sad and painful time.

“The family is helped by specially trained officers and they are in our first priority.

“Nobody should have to go through what they’re going through, especially at this time of year.

“As part of this swift investigation, we have made another arrest today.”

She continued: “That night we recovered a Toyota Land Cruiser from a car park in Brindle Street, after it had been traveling along Livesey Branch Road following a fatal collision.

“I would appeal to anyone who has CCTV, doorbell or dashcam that covered the area between Livesey Branch Road and Brindle Street between 4.30pm and 5pm on Christmas Day to view their footage.

“If you have captured a Toyota Land Cruiser, please contact my team.

“We know there was an altercation at The Gate prior to the fatal incident outside, which is linked.

“I would ask any witnesses we haven’t spoken to yet or anyone who has cell phone footage to also get in touch with my team.”

A police spokeswoman said the case was being treated as an “isolated incident”.

She added: “I am aware that news of this incident will cause some concern in the community. I would like to reassure everyone that we have increased reassurance patrols in the area.”

Kirk’s family said he was a “beloved son, brother and uncle who will be greatly missed.”

They said, “Rest with your dad in heaven now.”

The family added: “Our hero, spread your wings far and wide, your partner Leanne and your babies love you to millions.

– You really were like no other, good night.

Anyone with information or footage is asked to call 101, quoting log 747 of 27 December 2024.
