One TikTok star wasn’t looking for a job in showbiz — but here’s what’s happening.
Nine days ago, creator Megan Boni, who goes by the username Girl On Couch on the social media platform, was just a typical 26-year-old working a day job in sales and making funny videos along the way.
Then her satirical song “I’m looking for a man in finance” became viral. It has now been endlessly remixed, gone viral around the world, and Boni says her life has been completely turned upside down.
“I haven’t slept. I feel like I’ve been passed out for a week,” she tells PEOPLE. “Suddenly I have an agent.”
Boni, who went to Penn State and moved to New York after graduation in 2019, adds, “I’m about to hire a manager. I even quit my job!” (She notes that her company was cool about it. “They were like, ‘We get it! You get it,'” she says.)
But Boni notices that everything is more than surreal.
“I’ve got calls from big companies. I’ve got all these DJs who want to release the first single with me, so all of a sudden I’m starting in the music industry,” she explains.
Boni also says that the song is already heavily in rotation at concerts and clubs.
“People ask me if I’m mad that I didn’t get credit and I’m like no way, I literally asked DJs to remix it!” she says.
However, Boni adds that she is looking forward to the release of the official single so that she can receive royalties.
According to the TikToker, the idea for the song came from making fun of girls who complained about being single but had a list of expectations from potential partners.
“I was just making fun of it, so I started thinking about the most unusual things that are the hardest to find in a person and I wrote it down, and then I came up with that rhyme.” (The tune reads: “Looking for a man in finance / Endowment fund, 6’5,” blue eyes.)
Not only have a lot of people added beats to the lyrics, but the next trend is to give your own beat to the lyrics.
Music producer FINNEAS posted: “Looking for WiFi. Friend’s house. Hotel. Airport.”
As for what’s next, Boni says the song will be released as a single, and she’s hoping for gigs and festival appearances. He also wants to try his hand at comedy.
“I’d love to take stand-up or improv classes, maybe acting classes. And I’ll probably go on YouTube,” she explains.
The rising star adds that her family and friends can’t believe what’s happening.
“I have two brothers who probably hate me right now because everyone keeps asking them about it. But my parents are thrilled,” she says.
Boni adds: “You always hope your content will get views, but I had no idea this would resonate. It’s turned into a monster! The internet is crazy.”
