TikTok Star Emily Mariko Talks Her Salmon Bowl, Pregnancy Cravings and More in Rare Interview (Exclusive)

Emily Mariko talks about all her biggest milestones.

The content creator — best known for her leftover salmon bowl, which went viral on TikTok in 2021 — spoke with PEOPLE in a rare interview about her partnership with meal kit brand Green Chef. Mariko, 32, revealed the inspiration behind the beloved bowl, her pregnancy wishes and more.

“It’s been a little over two years since I went viral. And since then I got engaged, married and got pregnant. So a lot has changed in that sense – says Mariko, who married her longtime partner Matt Rickard in August, and announced her pregnancy in December.

“But other than that, my daily life and my routines are mostly the same,” he adds. “In a way, things have changed a lot. But in others, I still feel like the same person I was before the virality.”

Marika’s signature video style includes simple meals and ASMR. Her viral salmon post followed the same formula; in her video, which was released in August 2021, she microwaves leftover Gulf-caught salmon with white rice and an ice cube, then combines it with soy sauce, Kewpie mayo and hot sauce to put together a hearty lunch.

Her inspiration for the meal is close to home. “A lot of the comfort meals I make, like the salmon bowl, are things my mom made or my grandma made. So a lot of inspiration comes from my everyday life,” she says.

When the recipe first exploded, Mariko paid no attention to the uproar. “I had my head down during the salmon bowl phase. I was focused on creating more content,” she says. “I tried not to look around too much and see what was going on outside of my own kitchen.”

In addition to family recipes, the TikToker finds creativity in her visits to the market.

“It’s my weekly routine,” she says. “I’m coming home. I make a little list and then try to make weekly dinners based on everything I’ve bought.”

Her passion for simple ingredients and easy meals makes her partnership with Green Chef a “perfect” fit, she says. Mariko is launching a series of branded recipes to showcase its meal packages, which include everything from Chicken with Apricot Sriracha Sauce to Beef Tenderloin with Brown Butter Potatoes.

From the week of March 4th through the week of March 25th, customers can choose from two Green Chef x Emily Mariko recipes per week to be delivered to their door.

Of course, Marika’s favorite recipe is sockeye salmon with sweet hot sauce. “If you’re like me and like sweet and salty, I think this is probably a favorite,” she says. “If you like my salmon bowl, you’ll really like this dish.”

A collection of eight recipes satisfies even the pregnant wishes of expectant mothers.

“I love gravy,” she says of her staples since finding out she was pregnant. “And a lot of those dishes have a delicious sauce that goes over the whole thing. Even if you’re not pregnant, I think you’ll think it’s delicious.”

As for her next journey into parenthood, Mariko says she couldn’t be happier.

“I’m so excited. We’re so excited. I feel really good,” he adds. “Green Chef will be so convenient when I’m a little further away, and maybe I’m a little tired or I don’t want to cook as much or I don’t have as much time to go to the market, but also they still want organic healthy meals.”
