Don’t even think about asking Travis Kelce to shave!

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end has become synonymous with a distinct look — his mustache, that is — that begins to take shape just before the start of a new NFL season and is maintained for the 18-plus weeks that follow.

Kelce, 35, tells PEOPLE exclusively that the mustache move is strategic. “I grow a mustache every training camp — or at least the last three or four years since we’ve been doing these title runs in honor of coach Andy Reid,” he says. “He’s a walrus!”

The NFL star, who has been coached by Reid, 66, since being selected by the Chiefs during the 2013 draft, has been eyeing his longtime coach’s iconic facial hair for some time. “He has that thing that looks beautiful every day,” Kelce adds.

The stylish tight end also let it be known that he wasn’t the only person on the team affected by Reid’s mustache. “It’s not just me, a couple of forwards and a couple of skill players on offense have all done it in their first year,” he says.

Although Kelce initially thought “it would be funny to show up” with the same facial hair as Reid, now he and the team have kept their upper lips to “keep the tradition alive.” In fact, the tradition has turned into a somewhat victorious one, to say the least.

Reid has led the Kelce and Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories, including back-to-back wins in 2023 and 2024, since taking over as head coach in 2013. The team, which has won four NFL championships in its franchise history, is seeking its third straight and overall the fifth title in February 2025.

With that goal in mind, Kelce is mindful of the tactical decision to keep his mustache during the 2024-2025 season. because “there is always magic in a mustache,” he says. “There’s an aura around it. It just brings success.”

While that’s probably true for football season, Kelce has yet to create a superstition surrounding his latest on-screen venture as a Prime Video host Are you smarter than a celebrity. Although the game premiered in the middle of the current NFL season on October 16, his mustache was notably absent.

That’s because the athlete, who is seen sporting a groomed beard on the show, filmed the series over the summer, alongside the show’s contestants and celebrity guests.

With Kelce as host, the Prime Video contestants series relies on the help of various stars who are selected to help the contestants answer elementary school questions on a range of subjects (instead of competing against students as in the original series, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy) in hopes of win $100,000.

Kelce is calling Are you smarter than a celebrity? “nice little twist” on the game show classic, sharing that he “always thought it was a really fun show.” He adds, “Now that I had the chance to restore it a little bit, make it my own and I don’t know… I was really excited about it.”
