Uber Eats Edits Its Super Bowl 2024 Commercial After Backlash Over a Peanut Allergy Joke

Viewers weren’t crazy about the joke in Uber Eats’ Super Bowl ad.

The original ad for the food delivery service was released online on February 6, but the version that aired during the big game on February 11 omitted the peanut allergy joke.

Uber Eats’ Super Bowl 2024 ad is based on the tagline, “Whatever you forget, remember that Uber Eats gets the groceries.” It includes a series of people who forget simple things, like Jennifer Aniston not recognizing her Friends costar David Schwimmer, David and Victoria Beckham don’t mention her legendary Spice Girls name, and Usher wishes she could perform at the Super Bowl halftime straight after the show.

Jennifer Aniston forgot David Schwimmer in the Uber Eats commercial.

One memorable moment in the ad released on February 6, which can still be found in an unreleased YouTube video, shows a man eating peanut butter with spoons while his eye swells and his face breaks out in a rash. “There’s peanuts in the peanut butter?” he says. “Oh, it’s the primary ingredient.”

The scene includes a warning about food allergies. “Please, please, don’t forget that there are peanuts in peanut butter,” reads the small print message at the bottom of the ad.

Last week, the ad received backlash online for its peanut butter joke. Food allergy research and education reposted the ad on X (formerly known as Twitter) with a statement.

“We are incredibly disappointed that @UberEats is using life-threatening food allergies as humor in their Super Bowl ad. The suffering of 33 million+ Americans with this condition is no joke. A life-threatening food allergy is a disease, not a diet. Enough is enough,” the announcement reads.

On February 9, the nonprofit’s executive director, Sung Poblete, shared an update. “I have spoken with Uber, they greatly appreciate FARE’s valuable perspective and feedback and have made a change in the ad that will air to the general Super Bowl audience, they are editing out the reference to peanut allergy,” the statement said.

Uber Eats did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

An updated version of the ad was shared on Uber Eats’ YouTube channel Sunday morning, and the ad that aired during the Super Bowl did not include the peanut joke. In its place is a scene where someone forgets to sit in a chair.
