According to recent allegations, Russian forces kidnapped and executed the mayor of a Ukrainian village, Olga Sukhenko, along with her son and husband. As the New York Post reports, she and her husband Ihor, as well as their 25-year-old son Oleksandr, were kidnapped on March 23.
The dead were apparently discovered on Saturday, April 2, in a makeshift trench-like tomb used as a barracks by Russian forces. According to local media, the lady and her family were killed. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk confirmed her death, saying Sukhenko and her family were kidnapped and slaughtered “in captivity.”
Information about Olga Sukhenko?
Sukhenko was the mayor of Motyzhyn, a Ukrainian village just a few kilometers from the capital, Kyiv. Although nothing is known about the late Ukrainian mayor, she appeared to be in her late fifties or early sixties. Olga Sukhenko (as Olha) joined the Motyzhyn Village Council in 2002, according to her Facebook page. Sukhenko probably ran for mayor in 2006. However, this information could not be confirmed. The late mayor allegedly went to school at address no. 127 in Kiev, and then continued his studies at the Kyiv Academy of Water Transport, named after Peter Konadevich-Sagaidachny.
According to a Ukrainian military source,
“The occupiers assumed they were working with our forces, providing us with positions to fire our artillery. The whole family was tortured, slaughtered and killed by that vermin. He will be responsible for that.”
Meanwhile, several sources suggested that the mayor’s body, along with her husband and child, was dumped in a forest hole. According to Daria Belenitsina, who claimed to Reuters that she was Alexander’s girlfriend, Russian forces visited Olga Sukhenko’s home on March 23.
Belenicina said that the soldiers returned and blindfolded Suhenko and her husband. Allegedly, they returned home for the third time to pick up Olga Sukhenko’s son, Oleksandr. Anton Herashchenko, a local resident, recognized the three remains as belonging to the Sukhenko family and said that the “Russian invaders” tortured and executed the entire family of the village chief. A fourth corpse was also discovered near the same hole. However, this has yet to be determined.
According to the Associated Press, a villager named Oleg claimed the Russian military was trying to take over the community, targeting village authorities and killing anyone who refused to obey. Sukhenko also said he refused to comply with the demands of the Russian military.
