An air accident can occur when an aircraft experiences a sudden and serious accident in flight, caused by things such as bad weather, system problems, pilot or air traffic controller errors, or bird strikes. This often damages the aircraft and causes possible injury to passengers and crew. In some tragic plane crashes, some survivors have incredible stories of survival. These stories of survival are like miracles because they defy the odds and show the power of human resilience.

1. Vesna Vulović

Vesna Vulović is a former Serbian flight attendant. She was on JAT Yugoslav Airlines Flight 367, which was flying to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, from Stockholm, Sweden. The plane exploded in midair and crashed in Czechoslovakia on January 26, 1972. She is the only survivor of the crash and holds the Guinness World Record for surviving the highest fall without a parachute, at 10,160 meters. She was seriously injured, she was in a coma, her skull and pelvis were broken, her vertebrae, legs and ribs were broken. She was initially paralyzed from the waist down, but later recovered, although she walked with a limp.

2. Bahia Bakari

Yemenia Flight 626 was flying from Yemen to Comoros when it crashed into the Indian Ocean on June 30, 2019, killing all 152 people on board. Bahia Bakari was the only survivor of the accident. She was only 12 years old when the accident happened. she sustained injuries including a fractured pelvis, collarbone, facial injuries and burns to her knees. After the rescue, she met her father again, but her mother died in an accident. Her remarkable survival earned her the nickname “miracle girl” in the media.

3. Cecelia Cichan

Northwest Airlines Flight 255 was flying from Romulus, Michigan to Phoenix, Arizona when it crashed shortly after takeoff on August 16, 1987. About 156 people died in the crash, including two people on the ground. This crash holds the record for the deadliest plane crash with only one survivor and is the second deadliest plane crash in US history. Cecelia Cichan was the only survivor of the accident. She was only four years old when it happened. Cichana’s parents and her six-year-old brother were among the dead. She suffered a fractured skull, broken leg and collarbone, as well as severe burns that required four skin grafts.

4. Ruben van Assouw

An Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A330 crashed near the runway of Tripoli Airport in Libya on May 12, 2010, killing 103 people. Ruben van Assouw, who was 9 years old at the time, was the only survivor of the tragic plane crash. He had four broken legs and lost a considerable amount of blood, but luckily his head and neck were unharmed. Unfortunately, both of Ruben’s parents lost their lives in the accident.

5. Juliana Koepcke

Juliane Koepcke was 17 when LANSA Flight 508 crashed into the Amazon rainforest on December 24, 1971. The flight was scheduled to fly from Lima to Iquitos, but encountered a thunderstorm just 25 minutes after takeoff. Lightning struck the plane causing it to crash. Juliane said she suddenly found herself outside the plane, still strapped into her seat which was connected to the row of seats. She fell about 3,000 meters and crashed in the Amazon, losing consciousness. She woke up the next day and spent 11 days hiking through the rainforest before finding help.
