Usher on Trying to Make a Viral Moment with Super Bowl Performance: 'I Gotta Do It in 13 Minutes'

The R&B star opened up about his upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance in an interview with Apple Music

Usher is under pressure!

In an interview at an Apple Music press conference on Thursday, the R&B superstar, 45, opened up about creating a career-long Super Bowl LVIII halftime performance that didn’t disappoint.

“I got to do it in 13 minutes,” Usher said of his upcoming set. “It makes it a little more difficult.”

He added that “it was definitely a challenge to squeeze 30 years into 13 minutes.”

Usher announces career-spanning North American tour kicking off in August

When asked how he approached the set list for his show, Usher noted that there were “fantasy lists” that contained dream artists and songs he considered when coming up with it.

“I’ve been very aware of my past, celebrating my present — which is here in Las Vegas — and thinking about where we’re going in the future,” the “U Got It Bad” singer said. “That was actually the idea.”

Usher explained that he considered the songs that people know him for and celebrated the journey of “life, love and emotion” that his music offered.

“I was thinking about a few moments that were special in dance. I was thinking about some of the things that I’ve created here in Las Vegas like skating and working on things that I haven’t done on stage up to this point so that I can share that with the world,” he explained.

Usher added: “For everyone who heard about my show in Las Vegas, now you’re going to get a chance to see some of what I did here. But you’re going to get the most out of it because it’s in front of 60,000 people in this room — and hopefully 180,000 people.” , 80 million people that the world will see.”

After “Yes!” the artist’s appearance at the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show and the end of his Las Vegas residency, he will embark on a North American tour.

The Live Nation tour, dubbed the USHER: Past Present Future Tour, will span his entire career, including hits from his 1994 debut album. Usherto new singles from his ninth studio album Coming homewhich was released on Friday, ahead of the Super Bowl.

“Usher brings his smooth R&B songs, infectious smile and smooth moves to fans around the world,” reads a press release for the tour.

The tour is set to kick off on August 20th at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC before heading to cities like Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Toronto, Canada. The final date will take place at the United Center in Chicago on October 29.
