Valerie Bertinelli and Boyfriend Mike Goodnough Split After 10 Months of Dating (Exclusive)

Valerie Bertinelli and her boyfriend Mike Goodnough have gone their separate ways.

“They are no longer in a relationship,” a source told PEOPLE.

Bertinelli and Goodnough have been going the distance since January. (Bertinelli lives in Los Angeles and Goodnough is based on the East Coast.) The actress told PEOPLE in July that sticking to their three-week rule “was challenging.”

Goodnough tells PEOPLE, “Valerie and I are the only two people who have insight into our relationship. Neither of us pay much attention to the conversation between people outside of it.”

Bertinelli first spoke about Goodnough in the April cover story of PEOPLE. She said they became friends when he commented on one of her Instagram posts a few years ago.

“I thought it was interesting,” she said. “It was purely platonic, but there was something about him that I associated with what I was familiar with. Comfort level. He felt like a kindred spirit.”

They spoke on the phone for the first time in January and things got heated. “His voice had the most beautiful color. I said, ‘Oh, I can’t talk to that man right now because he’s really hot.’ We both had strong feelings, trying not to admit them,” she said.

The couple quietly went public on April 3 when they Let yourself go the author of the cookbook went out to shoot a movie The Drew Barrymore Show with him by her side. Goodnough spoke about their relationship for the first time not long after.

“I’m Valerie Bertinelli’s boyfriend… and that might be one of the most surreal lines I’ve ever uttered. But it’s true… and nothing about our real relationship seems surreal. It just seems… well… good luck… a gift,” he wrote on his Substack called Hoarse Whisperings.

Since then, Bertinelli has been singing her praises on social media, and they even made their red carpet debut at the Daytime Emmys in June.

During her PEOPLE cover story interview in April, Bertinelli said they “never go more than ‘three weeks’ without seeing each other.” But in an interview with PEOPLE in July, she said that “it’s been challenging” to keep up with it. “The summer is full. It’s challenging,” she added.

After initially being so open about her new love, Bertinelli said she wants to keep her relationship more private going forward.

“Part of me is like it was so public and now I’m trying to step back and make it less public, and try to keep some things to ourselves,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s like, ‘Oh, but, yeah, I let the cat out of the bag.’ I don’t know. I’d like it to stay between us and make it a little more special.”

“Even though I’ve been so public with it, now part of me just wants to protect,” she said, adding that her boyfriend is “awesome.”

Bertinelli was married to financial planner Tom Vitale from 2011 to 2022, and before that she was married to Van Halen frontman Eddie Van Halen from 1981 to 2007.

She’s been candid about her breakups in the past, sharing words of wisdom on social media.

“When something is toxic, and it’s always been that way…Do your best to heal your way to indifference,” she wrote on her Instagram Story in March 2023, after her divorce. “You don’t have to forgive to move on🤍.”

Valerie Bertinelli says she’s ‘learning to trust again’ with new boyfriend after previously ‘destroying trust’

During her relationship with Goodnough, she shared the positive influence he had on her journey of self-healing.

“It’s not easy to learn to trust again after that trust has been destroyed. Those demons want to protect you from ever being vulnerable and emotionally exposed again,” she said in an Instagram post in June 2024. “This man is worth fighting with the rest of my demons. He is the most thoughtful, kind, gentle, intelligent, witty and grateful man I have ever met.”
