Viewers unconvinced by this plot detail in The Tower’s penultimate episode

The second series of ITV’s The Tower aired its third episode on Wednesday night, but one plot detail left some viewers watching at home confused.

The episode in question starred DS Sarah Collins Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan delved deeper into the unsolved case of murdered teenager Tania when she discovered the remains buried in a car park.

Believing these to be the remains of a schoolgirl who disappeared 26 years ago, the homicide team took the mother to identify the body – but viewers were not convinced that this plot was real.

One person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Weirdest family body ID ever. Was this the skirt Bones wore??” Another agreed, adding: “Like the police taking a mother to see the bones of her murdered daughter buried in a parking lot. Unreal! #thetower.”

A third echoed the confusion, writing: “Sorry but where was the tent and why did they let mum see the bones? #TheTower,” while a fourth joked: “Of course they’re going to bring a mother to look directly at her dead daughter’s skeleton #thetower “, as a fifth simply said, “Not very likely, is it?”

However, others were more lenient with the scene and even compared it to another hit ITV drama, Unforgotten, which stars Sanjeev Bhaskar, Sinead Keenan and, previously, Nicola Walker. One said to a fan’s objection: “Then you haven’t seen Unforgotten!”

The synopsis explains: “The antagonistic relationship between seasoned Sarah Collins and rookie cop Lizzie Adam is at the heart of Tower 2, as they are forced to work together for the first time and begin to gain a sense of each other’s unique strengths.”

As well as Gemma reprising her starring role in the second series of The Tower, fans enjoyed seeing the extended cast return to their screens.

Jimmy Akingbola returned as DC Steve Bradshaw and Emmett J Scanlan reprized his role as DI Kieran Shaw. Also appearing is Tahirah Sharif, who plays PC Lizzie Adam. Tahirah was even nominated for a BAFTA for her role as a young policewoman.

Meanwhile, the finale Tower the second series will air on Thursday evening. But if you can’t wait that long, episode four is now available to watch on ITVX.

And there’s more good news as ITV has already confirmed a third series of The Tower. The third part, which is currently in production, will be adapted from Kate London’s third novel, Gallowstreet Lane.
