In 1985, he made his debut in first-class cricket for the Punjab Cricket Team against the Services Cricket Team. From 1985 to 2003, he participated in 146 games and made 11,473 runs with a weight of 33 tons. He was a member of the Punjab cricket team which won the Ranji Trophy in 1992.

He made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Sharjah on 15 April 1996 and made his Test match debut against England on 6 June 1996. He played six Test matches and seven ODIs. In two half-centuries, he scored 131 runs in Tests and 193 runs in ODIs.

In 2003, he retired from first-class cricket and settled in England. Later, he was appointed as the coach of Punjab cricket team. He also coached the Himachal Pradesh cricket team. In 2011, he served as the assistant coach of IPL team Kings XI Punjab. Until 2016, Ratul was one of the national selectors under the senior selection committee headed by Sandeep Patil. Ratul served as the director of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association from 2017 to 2019.
