The government has issued an order to Twitter and other social media platforms, telling them not to share a viral video of two Manipuri women parading naked, according to the latest reports. Social media executives are abiding by Indian laws as the matter is currently under investigation. Publishing the identity of victims of sexual crimes is a punishable offense under Indian law. Manipur CM N Biren Singh tweeted about the incident and reported that the first arrest in the case was made on the morning of July 20, as per the latest development. It is well known that women’s bodies often become a battlefield during riots and conflicts, and that rape and sexual assault are used as instruments of violence to punish them. The sexual assault on Kuki women in Manipur is the latest example. It is disturbing to watch the video, which shows the women crying, writhing in pain and begging their attackers for mercy. In order to restore some kind of trust in Manipur, especially among the Kuki minority community, the authorities are now under pressure to act quickly against the perpetrators and bring justice for the women. People across the country feel that this should not be happening in modern India. A session of Parliament in Delhi was adjourned on Thursday as MPs demanded a debate on the issue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that the incident “has shamed India” and that “no culprit will be spared.”
