What is Legion of Honor?
The Legion of Honor or the Order of the Legion of Honor is the highest honor of France, both military and civilian. It is one of the most prominent national awards in the world. Napoleon Bonaparte founded the Order in 1802. This honor has been conferred for more than 200 years in the name of the head of state of France. Honneur et Patrie, French for honor and homeland, is the motto of the Order. According to the official website of the Legion of Honor, 300 foreigners and 2,200 French nationals are awarded each year.
