Former wide receiver Chad Ochocinco grew up in Miami, Florida with his parents, Sam and Paula Johnson. Despite not having the role of a father in his life, Chad was mainly raised by his grandmother and mother. Although Chad’s father was in prison for most of his early childhood, he showed a desire to get to know him.
Chad took advantage of his father’s release from prison and spent time with him. Despite the fact that both of Chad’s parents have died, he still admires and respects them. After graduating from high school, he went on to play college football for Santa Monica College and Oregon State. He was selected 36th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2000 NFL Draft. The former footballer grew up with his grandmother and mother by his side while his father, Sam Brown, was in prison, apparently for a drug-related offence. Ochocinco Johnson had a difficult past and was raised by his grandmother and mother. Despite his father’s absence, his mother and grandmother were important people in his life, and his mother actively participated in his activities and transported him to school and practice.
Chad had no contact with his father for nearly 20 years, but after he was released from prison, he spent time with him, including attending his games. Despite the hardships, Chad said he holds no ill will toward his father and wants to learn more about him. Tragically, Chad’s father, Sam Brown, passed away on January 16, 2012 from cancer.
Additionally, his mother, Paula Johnson, died in 2021 at the age of 65. Chad, better known as “Ochocinco”, has been open about how losing his mother has taken a toll on his mental health. He expressed similar sentiments on the “I’m an Athlete” podcast: “It hurts to lose the person responsible for who I am,” he said. “Those memories will always be there. I have memories, both pleasant and horrible. Through the ups and downs, I learned that I had to strike a balance and keep the pendulum from swinging too far in either direction.

The former NFL star and his girlfriend, Sharelle Rosado, just announced their engagement exclusively to PEOPLE. Sharelle Rosado was overjoyed, saying, “This is the next step in our beautiful journey together,” after Chad Ochocinco got down on one knee in front of friends and family. The couple, who have been together for many years, welcomed a baby girl, Serenity, in January 2022.
