Biography of Charles Martinet
Charles Martinet was born on September 17, 1955. He is of French origin and speaks French and Spanish very well. When he was 12, his family moved first to Barcelona and then to Paris. Charles began his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he intended to major in international law, but gave up when his professor made him read aloud from his book, chapter by chapter.
Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, affected him. Then one of his friends advised him to take acting lessons when he could face his phobia. His first duty was to perform a monologue from the “Spoon River Anthology”. Eventually, the Berkeley Repertory Theater provided Charles with an apprenticeship. He spent years honing his craft with Berkeley Repertory before moving to London to study at Drama Studio London. There he discovered his knack for accents and dialects, along with a host of other abilities. He later joined the Berkeley Repertory Theater after returning to California. Charles joined the San Jose Repertory Theater as a founding member and held that position for four years.

One day, an acquaintance of Martinet’s advised him to attend an audition to be held at a trade show and applicants are required to “talk to people like a plumber”. Martinet intended to speak in a stereotypically deep, raspy Italian accent, but later decided it would be too harsh for the children to hear.
