Kacey Musgraves and Cole Schafer have gone their separate ways.

After an alleged split in November 2023, Musgraves confirmed their split in March 2024 during an interview with Cut. “I’m not sorry that I lived and loved as hard as I did,” she told the magazine. “Whenever I’m in a relationship, I’m all fucked up.”

Schafer and the “High Horse” singer were first seen together in June 2021 — about a year after Musgraves announced her divorce from Ruston Kelly.

During their years together, Musgraves and Schafer were very open about their romance, the singer said Time was intentional.

“I’m proud of the love I have. I’m very happy,” she said in March 2022. “It’s natural to want to share that. And I don’t want to come off as a robot — I think people like me because I share who I am.”

He is a writer

According to his website, Schafer works in advertising as a songwriter “by day” and sleepwalks as a poet “by night,” under the pen name January Black. He wrote three books of poetry and prose: A minute, please?, After Her and Guillotine.

While Schafer doesn’t regret her decision to be a writer, she admits she struggles with it at times.

I’m a writer. But because I chose to be a writer, I also chose not to be everything else that I am listed above. I think this is the pain that Jonathan Safran Foer described when he wrote: ‘Sometimes I can hear my bones strain under the weight of all the lives I’m not living.’ ”

Schafer lives in Nashville, according to his LinkedIn bio. Musgraves previously revealed on Instagram that Schafer is originally from southern Indiana.

In a June 2022 Instagram post, Schafer shared excerpts from his book, Guillotine, including at least one song that appeared to be about Musgraves. The song read: “There’s a polaroid of her / on the dashboard of my ’89 Range Rover; / a polaroid where the wind is blowing / with an easterly fan; / as she looks over her left shoulder, / her eyes devour something the camera doesn’t see.”

Schafer liked to pay tribute to Musgraves’ career victories. In February 2022, he posted a carousel of black-and-white photos on Instagram from backstage at Madison Square Garden, where Musgraves performed a sold-out show on February 7. He called the night “a big fucking deal, a bigger deal than I think her modesty will let her wrap her head around.”

Schafer described Musgraves as “the most naturally gifted person” he’s ever been around and admired her lack of visible nerves before a show, as well as her off-stage persona.

“What impresses me most about her is that she is the same person when she is talking to my mother, father, grandfather, my brothers or my best friend Jack as she is when she is talking to an arena filled with 15,000 people (except for maybe a fiery heart which explodes and some other lovely theatrics),” he wrote. “So all that to say, Kace didn’t just sell out The Garden. She sold out The Garden the same way she’s built her entire career: by being completely and unapologetically. And, you know, that’s really something.”

He has hobbies outside of writing

Although writing is his main passion, Musgraves documented how Schafer pursued a variety of other activities. On his 28th birthday, the singer wrote a touching tribute to Schafer on Instagram, praising him for his various traits and skills, including playing the guitar and cooking well enough to “turn [Musgraves] on.”

He and Musgraves set up a charity ball

In December 2021, Schafer and Musgraves hosted the inaugural Teddy Bear Ball in Nashville to raise money for Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. at Vanderbilt. The couple partnered with Build-A-Bear to donate funds and more than 300 teddy bears to the hospital.

In honor of the second annual gala in 2022, Schafer discussed the inspiration behind the event at the Twitter threadsaying they were inspired by a dog named Squid who works as an assistance animal at a hospital and wanted to raise money to train another dog.

Musgraves also shared photos from the gala on Instagram, including a sweet shot of her and Schafer posing with teddy bears at the event, where she performed alongside frequent collaborator Daniel Tashian and his band The Silver Seas.
