Who Is LeVar Burton’s Wife? All About Stephanie Cozart Burton

LeVar Burton and his wife Stephanie Cozart Burton had a classic Hollywood reunion.

While LeVar played Kunta Kinte on Roots: gift, his wife was behind the scenes as a makeup artist. The couple met in 1988 on set, dated for about four years and married in 1992. Two years later, they started their own family, welcoming a daughter, Michaela “Mica” Jean Burton. Stephanie is also an animal lover, so their family includes a horse and two dogs.

In a 2013 interview with Serial Optimist, LeVar shared why he loves his wife Stephanie so much. “She is hysterical. She also has a wicked sense of humor, also very morbid. Stephanie is a goddess,” he told the news outlet. “Extremely intelligent, stunning to look at. INTENSE in her energy. She is a goddess. I married a goddess.”

Ten years later, LeVar felt the same way. In April 2023, LeVar told PEOPLE, “My wife taught me what love looks like, sounds like, tastes like, smells like.”

The pair continued to work together, including on LeVar’s popular series Reading the Rainbow. And, even though his wife is behind the scenes while he’s in the spotlight, LeVar said he wants to focus on his family.

“One of my goals during this 45-year career was to make my family proud. Or maybe, conversely, not to embarrass them. So far so good,” he said Rolling stone in 2021

She is a makeup artist

Stephanie grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and attended Indiana University Bloomington where she majored in sociology. She also studied at the Joe Blasco Make-Up School, where she learned her craft.

She was a make-up artist for numerous films and television shows. She recently worked on Whose line is that anyway?, Conversation and Ned and Stacey. Her first listed job was as a make-up artist for a hit sitcom, Facts of life.

Stephanie also worked on two iconic projects from the 90s and 2000s, the sitcom Friends with Tracee Ellis Ross and the film White people can’t jump with Woody Harrelson.

According to her LinkedIn, Stephanie is head of makeup at Netflix for The Upshaws.

She met LeVar on the set

In 1988, Stephanie met her future husband on the set Roots: gift. The couple dated for almost four years before tying the knot on October 3, 1992. The couple didn’t reveal much about their romance, but they did share photos from their wedding.

In 2019 LeVar posted a picture from their special day on X (formerly Twitter). “27 years ago today I jumped the broom with @StephanieCozart, the love of my life!” the TV personality wrote.

She and LeVar have a daughter

Stephanie and LeVar have one child, a daughter named Mica, who was born on July 8, 1994.

Mica followed in her father’s footsteps. In 2016, she graduated from the University of Michigan School of Theater and Dance with a BA in Acting and a BA in Fine Arts. She worked as an actress for the Avalon Artists Group and appeared in miniseries and music videos.

Mica even had to act together with her dad Star Trek: Picard 2023 Speaking with PEOPLE that April, LeVar reflected on the joy of bringing his daughter to the shoot. “Mica grew up with all of them,” LeVar said of his Star Trek colleagues, some of whom were best men at his wedding to Stephanie. Mica added: “Dad drove me to work, and there was only my family on the set, mine Star Trek family.”

LeVar also has a son, Eian Burton Smith, with Chimara P. Smith.

She was a Playboy bunny

Stephanie is a former Playboy bunny and even shared throwback photos of herself in the iconic bunny costume.

The makeup artist was one of the original Playboy Bunnies, working at the Los Angeles and Century City Playboy Clubs between 1981 and 1986. These days, Stephanie’s costume is a fun dress-up game for her daughter Mica, who published on X about trying on the iconic uniform.

She won a Daytime Emmy

While LeVar has three Emmy nominations for his work on Roots (1977), Reading the Rainbow (1996) and Roots (2016), his wife is an Emmy winner.

In 2013, she took home a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Makeup for her work Conversation.

She is an animal lover

Stephanie often shares photos of her animal family on Instagram. She has two small dogs, Roux and Reania, and a horse that she and her daughter ride. She credited them with helping her get through the tough times.

A day in the barn with our ‘big dog’ is a cure-all,” Stephanie wrote on Instagram about her horse. In another post, Stephanie affectionately referred to her dogs as “mommy’s babies.”

LeVar and Stephanie have been married for over 30 years

On October 3, 2021, the couple celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary, dedicating Instagram posts to each other.

“29 years ago today @scozartburton and I jumped the broom. Spoiler alert: they lived happily ever after… ♥️🥂♥,” he wrote alongside a photo from their wedding.

“When you wake up to roses and diamonds — it’s a good day💖Happy 29th anniversary my love!!”, she wrote on Instagram under a photo of flowers from her husband.

She is brutally honest with her husband

The Reading the Rainbow alum shared with The Associated Press, per The Seattle Timesthat his wife was on hand as a trainer during his guest appearance as a host Danger! in 2021. She even did his makeup for his brief appearance on the competition series.

“I came backstage after filming the first episode and I said to Stephanie, ‘So, how did I do?’ “, he recalled. “She said, ‘Ehhh.’ Now, this is a woman who loves me enough to tell me the truth. She said it wasn’t me.”
