Who Is Michelle Wie West’s Husband? All About Jonnie West

Michelle Wie West has been married to her husband Jonnie West since 2019.

The former professional golfer, who started playing the sport when she was just 4 years old, met Jonnie through mutual friends. The couple eventually started dating, got engaged and married.

“The first time they met in person they seemed so comfortable with each other,” said Jeehae Lee, a friend of Michelle’s Golf week in 2021. “It wasn’t too polite to hide behind something either. They were just comfortable being who they were, which I thought was such a good sign. They really love each other.”

Michelle and Jonnie’s daughter Makenna was born in June 2020. Per Women and golf, Michelle talked about how she would like her daughter to see her play professionally. “I just want that experience of hers, for Makenna to watch me play and hopefully watch me come down and win a golf tournament,” she said. “It would mean everything to me because I want her to grow up to be a strong woman and all the things I value and hopefully she values.”

Jonnie is the son of NBA legend Jerry West

Jonnie was born in California in 1988. He may have married a golfer, but he too comes from a sporting family. Jonnie’s father is NBA legend Jerry West, and he was born to Jerry and his second wife, Kristen “Karen” Bua.

The couple went on to have another son, Ryan, while Jerry also has three sons with his first wife, Martha Jane Kane, giving Jonnie four brothers in total.

He played basketball in college

While still involved in the world of basketball, Jonnie played himself. According to The Org, he played college basketball for four years at West Virginia University. He made four NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the 2010 Final Four.

In college, Jonnie earned a BA in Sports Management and an MBA in Business Administration.

He is the director of pro personnel for the Golden State Warriors

According to Jonnie’s LinkedIn profile, he has been with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors since October 2012. He is currently the director of pro personnel, a role he has held since October 2021, but has also served as director of basketball operations and director of player programs, as well as a scout.

He was also the assistant general manager of the Santa Cruz Warriors, the minor league basketball team affiliated with the Golden State Warriors, between 2014 and 2016.

Jonnie and Michelle met through mutual friends

In 2022, Michelle and Jonnie appeared on Studio 22 podcast with host Brock O’Hurn and talked about how they first met. “We met through mutual friends,” said Michelle, and fellow golfer Justin Thomas also played a big role.

Michelle and her “good friend” Thomas both lived in Jupiter, Florida, while Thomas also knew Jonnie and had stayed with him and his parents at golf tournaments in the past. Meanwhile, they had other mutual friends.

“It’s a small world and it worked,” said Michelle.

They got engaged in 2019

Jonnie proposed to Michelle in March 2019, and the golfer announced the news on Instagram. She shared a series of photos, including one of Jonnie down on one knee, with the caption “My person for life!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ #WieGoesWest.”

After the first photo of Jonnie down on one knee, she shared a photo of the couple looking at the camera together while showing off their engagement rings, and another of them hugging and looking at each other.

Two months earlier, the couple went public with their relationship for the first time as Michelle shared a photo of them together on Instagram with the caption “Got to spend the last few days with my ❤️”.

He married Michelle in August 2019

Five months after announcing their engagement, Michelle and Jonnie tied the knot in Beverly Hills, California.

Guests at the wedding included golfers Danielle Kang, Jessica Korda, Marina Alex, Alison Lee and Alison Walshe, as well as NBA player Stephen Curry, Jonnie’s friend.

“She was so happy and looked so radiant,” Michelle’s coach David Leadbetter told the Golf Channel. “This is a great new chapter in her life. I’ve known Michelle since she was 13, more than half her life. So, it was quite emotional to see her get married. She will be a great wife and I am sure she will be a great mom one day, in the future.”

Michelle and Jonnie have one child together

In January 2020, Michelle announced on Instagram that she was pregnant. “Girl, we already love you so much and can’t wait to meet you this summer!!” she wrote in the description.

Then in June, she announced that she had given birth to a daughter, Makena. “Kenna honey, I’ve been waiting my whole life to meet you. Makenna Kamalei Yoona West, Your Daddy and I love you more than any words can describe. You are our whole 🌎 we can’t wait to watch you grow. ❤️ 6/19/20 ❤️,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside photos of her and Jonnie holding their daughter.

They share two dogs

In addition to having a daughter, Jonnie and Michelle share two shepherd dogs: Gatsby and Daisy. Both dogs were featured on their Instagram profiles: Michelle shared a family photo with both dogs on Christmas Day 2022, and Gatsby appeared as part of the couple’s pregnancy announcement on Instagram wearing a T-shirt with the words “Big Brother” across it.
