Whoopi Goldberg Defends Jo Koy’s Golden Globe Performance on The View: ‘These Hosting Gigs Are Brutal’

Whoopi Goldberg defends 2024 Golden Globes host Jo Koy.

Koy, 52, received mixed to negative reviews for his performance during Sunday night’s awards. Goldberg, 68, commiserated with the comedian during Monday’s episode View.

Goldberg, who hosted the Academy Awards four times (1994, 1996, 1999 and 2002), explained how “these guests are brutal – just brutal.”

“If you don’t know the room, if you haven’t been in these rooms before and somehow you’re thrown out. Hit or miss,” she said.

“Now I love Jo Koy. He, to me, just drives me crazy because he’s funny. I don’t know if it was a room. I don’t know if they were jokes. I didn’t get to see it,” Goldberg continued. “But I know he’s as good as it gets when it comes to standup. It’s not an easy game.”

The EGOT winner poked fun at her past hosting experiences, “If you’ve read any reviews of some of the concerts I’ve had [laughs] where you know, they dumped me in the corn field [laughs] die on the vine. I mean, it’s not an easy gig.”

As Goldberg continued to defend the standup comedian, her View Co-host Sara Haines added that she loves Koy and is “nervous for him.”

Alyssa Farah Griffin also shared her affection for the comedian, adding that he is “the one [of her] favorite guests” on View. Griffin also speculated, “I think he’s such an inherently nice person that it doesn’t come naturally to him to do more baking.”

While several of Koy’s jokes drew backlash, he told PEOPLE that he would “love” to host the awards show again. “At five months, not nine days,” Koy said. CBS announced that it will host in a press release on December 21st.

During his opening monologue, Koy went off script and blamed his short preparation time. “Gee, I got this 10 days ago. Want the perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me. Law? Take it easy,” he said from the stage. “I wrote some of these and they are the ones you laugh at.”

Koy’s quick diversion followed his jokes about the evening’s later winners, Oppenheimer and Barbie.

Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page, Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project. AND Barbie it’s based on a plastic doll with big tits.”

But after the joke failed to elicit a roar of laughter, that’s when Koy briefly went off script. He then quickly returned to his monologue and joked about Taylor Swift: “Big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? We have less footage of Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes,” he said, adding, “I swear, there’s more to do.”
