Whoopi Goldberg Surprised Her Mom with First Trip to Disneyland: ‘She Had No Idea Where We Were Going’

Whoopi Goldberg opened up about her first visit to the happiest place on earth.

During Thursday’s episode View, The Oscar winner, 68, told how she first visited the Disneyland Resort when she brought her late mother, Emma Harris Johnson, to enjoy their first experience together.

Goldberg shared with her co-hosts that she always wanted to visit a theme park as a child. She explained that her mother could not afford tickets for Goldberg and her brother Clyde.

But when Goldberg achieved enough success to visit the park, she finally took her mother with her.

“I took her,” the Tony winner said. “I first went in the early ’80s, but my mother always said ‘I’ll take you and Clyde’ — that’s my brother — ‘I’ll take you to Disneyland,’ and she could never afford to do that.”

She recounted how her mother came to visit her in California, but the Emmy winner took a quick trip from Los Angeles to Anaheim without her mother’s knowledge and surprised her at Disneyland. “I asked her to come see me in California, I sent her a card.”

Goldberg recalled her mother saying, “‘Where do you live?’ Because I feel like I’ve been in this car for a long time.’” The Grammy winner added, “She had no idea where we were going.”

Although her mother didn’t know their destination, Goldberg gave her a hint and asked her mother to peek and read the signs along the route: “I said, ‘Oh, Mom, I’m trying to find the thing — what does it say up there?’ And she said, ‘Disney … country,'” Goldberg recalled.

Recently, Goldberg celebrated her late brother’s legacy during an episode of the daytime talk show. On Golberg’s 68th birthday, she shared with her co-hosts that she appreciated the opportunity to celebrate another year.

“I think it’s important because I’m happy to have experienced this year.” She continued, “I outlived my brother — I’m older than my brother was — and I just feel like I should celebrate and have a good time for all those people who didn’t make it.”

Goldberg’s brother, Clyde K. Johnson, died of a brain aneurysm in 2015 at age 65, according to Entertainment Weekly. The actress and comedian marked his 74th birthday with a sweet Instagram post on October 17.
