Delhi Airport To Have Full Body Scanners By May 2024

Full-body scanners and CTX machines are expected to be installed at Delhi Airport by May 2024. Due to supply issues, the Civil Aviation Security Bureau is extending the deadline and negotiating with airport operators regarding the installation. Once the full-body scanners are in place, passengers will no longer need to take their electronics out of their carry-on bags. These technologies are expected to speed up safety procedures, which will benefit the growing Indian aviation industry. Domestic airlines transported more than 13.82 million passengers between January and November 2023.

Delhi airport to have full body scanners

A senior official on Friday said that full-body scanners at Delhi airport are expected to be installed by May 2024. “Full-body scanners will be installed by May 2024 at Delhi airport,” the official said. “A Computed Tomography (CTX) machine will also be installed at the Delhi airport by May next year, so that passengers will not have to remove their carry-on luggage during security checks.” On Friday, Zulfiqar Hasan, director general of BCAS, said the deadline for installing full-body scanners and CTX machines at some airports is being extended.

The deadline to install full-body scanners is December 31 at airports with more than 10 million passengers a year. The deadline for installing CTX machines at airports with more than 5 million passengers per year is also December 31. At a briefing in Delhi on Wednesday, BCAS spokesperson Mohammad Hasan said there were supply issues and they were in talks with airport operators to install scanners. Delhi airport is the largest in the country and passenger numbers are expected to exceed 70 million in the fiscal year ending March 2024. Once the CTX scanners are installed, passengers will no longer need to remove their electronic devices from their luggage during airport security checks port.

BCAS will gradually introduce full body scanners. Last year, BCAS recommended the installation of computed tomography (CT) scanners at airports, which would eliminate the need for passengers to remove their electronic devices from hand luggage before going through the scanner. Currently, passengers must remove and keep their electronic devices in a separate drawer while going through airport security. CT scanners in airports provide a 2D view of items in hand luggage. The installation of such scanners will also help reduce the time required for security checks at airports. India is one of the world’s fastest growing civil aviation markets.
