Watch Simu Liu Perform ‘I’m Just Ken’ from Barbie Live: ‘My Dream Come True’

Sim Liu is Kenough.

The Barbie The 34-year-old actor appeared at The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles on Wednesday to perform a variety of songs from his recently released EP ANXIETY-AVOIDANCE along with the whole band. At the show, Liu — who plays one of the many Kens in the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling hit — also paid tribute to the film by performing Matchbox Twenty’s “Push” and “I’m Just Ken,” a song Gosling himself sings at a key moment in the film .

“Repeat after me: It’s me. Kenough,” Liu can be seen saying on stage before launching into “I’m Just Ken,” in videos of the performance shared on social media. The Shang-Chi star leaned into the spirit of Kendom during his performance, at one point asking the crowd, “Are you ready to feel the Kenergy with me tonight? Let’s do it. You’re Kenough! You’re Kenough!”

At another point in Wednesday night’s show, Liu jokingly introduced “Push” by asking the crowd, “Do you mind if I play guitar for you? Sick!” in relation to the scene in Barbie in which all the Kens sing Matchbox Twenty’s 1997 single.

“What a pleasure it was to sing, laugh and mingle with the (sold out!) crowd at the hotel cafe,” Liu wrote in an Instagram post about the performance. “To everyone who bought a ticket and came out, know that you are part of the fundamental memory and the realization of my dream!”

“there are many people without whom this would never have been possible; you know who you are and you know how deeply and eternally grateful I am to you,” he added in the description. “thanks everyone, YOU are good, and let’s do it again in the new year!!!”

Liu has been looking to expand his horizons beyond acting since his star rose significantly after joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe to star in 2021. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ title character. He told PEOPLE back in April that he had “some aspirations” to appear on Broadway.

“I’m Just Ken” is still receiving praise as the movie industry enters awards season: The song received nominations for best song at both the 2024 Critics Choice Awards and the 2024 Golden Globes this week. Two other songs from Barbie — “Dance the Night” and “What Was I Made For?” — were also nominated for those awards.
