Ariana Grande shines as Glinda the Good Witch Wicked.
It’s also because of her sparkling performance as the co-lead — and her Glinda glam.
Frances Hannon, the film’s makeup and hair designer, tells PEOPLE that Grande wanted to “find” Glinda’s look with the help of Hannon’s team.

“She absolutely loves the makeup,” Hannon says of Grande, 31. “We tried really hard to keep it very bright and iridescent, to match those beautiful costumes. No hard lines, everything is soft. We kept it very youthful — lifting the outside the corner of the eyes, raising the corner of the eyelashes.”
Hannon also notes that Grande’s skin is “perfect,” which made it easy for her and her team to apply makeup.
Grande, who has often spoken about her penchant for makeup, also got involved in the glamorous process, adding her own touches to the look in an “interactive” way, Hannon says.

“She used to put a little highlighter — her rem beauty interstellar highlighter topper in Miss Mercury — on the tip of her nose as her kind of finishing touch before leaving the makeup trailer,” Hannon says of how the actress has incorporated her own beauty brand into her daily routine. on the set. “It was a very sweet touch that Ari had for his Glinda.”
In April 2023, while Grande was still filming, she teased on YouTube that Glinda would probably be wearing rem beauty when all was said and done, but wouldn’t reveal the details just yet.
“Glinda is carrying a few things,” she said at the time, adding: “I just wanted to be the new girl and find Glinda with her.”
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo embodied theirs Wicked Characters in this full press tour — check out the gorgeous looks
During Wicked stories, the characters are several years old — and at the beginning of the film, Glinda appears slightly older than she did when she was at Shiz University, so Hannon says she used makeup to subtly show that difference in the character’s age. For Glinda’s younger years at school, her makeup is lighter, while in her older years she looks more powerful and “princess-like” as she officially becomes “Glinda the Good Witch”.
These subtle differences were also seen in the wigs that Grande wore. Hannon says that Glinda, as a Shiza student, has warm-toned blonde hair that is cut a little shorter to make her look younger, while the older Glinda has a more icy-toned blonde with length.
“In her bladder [in the beginning of the movie]we stuck to the curls and folds of the dress,” Hannon says of how she and the team styled the wig. “We worked a lot in collaboration with our costume designer, Paul [Tazewell]and our sets, keeping the flow and look very magical.”
