Wicked Original Stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel Reunite at 20th Anniversary of Broadway Hit

Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel celebrated one wicked milestone on Monday.

The actresses were together again at the Gershwin Theater in New York, as they both attended the 20th anniversary screening of the film evil, Broadway blockbuster musical by songwriter Stephen Schwartz and librettist Winnie Holzman.

Dressed in two eye-catching looks, Chenoweth, 55, and Menzel, 52, posed for photographers on the red carpet, holding hands and laughing amid the snaps.

Chenoweth wore a white strapless, floor-length, pleated dress with accents of green glitter and matching green shoes. Menzel opted for a green and pink plaid trench coat, which she accessorized with a pink silk belt and sparkling silver brooches.

Of course, both actresses have a history Wickedafter the role of Glinda, i.e. Elphaba, in the musical – based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire — opened on Broadway on October 30, 2003.

Although they are already acting stars themselves,Wicked catapulted Chenoweth and Menzel into the echelon of musical theater icons. Menzel even won a Tony for her work in 2004 (one of three trophies the show took home that night).

Over the years, the two stars have reunited again and again for various milestones, including a performance of “For Good” at the 2021 Tony Awards Broadway is back an event.

But on Monday, they were surrounded by the sea Wicked past stars including Shoshana Bean, Jackie Burns, Amanda Jane Cooper, Hannah Corneau, Jennifer Dinoia, Marcie Dodd, Christine Dwyer, Eden Espinosa, Ana Gasteyer, Mandy Gonzalez, Kara Lindsay, Erin Mackey, Ginna Claire Mason, Erin Mackey, Alli Mauzey, Julia Murney, Kara Lindsay, Heather Pearce, Dee Roscioli, Talia Suskauer, Saycon Sengbloh, Kate Reinders and Carrie St. Louis.

Swartz, Holzman and Maguire were also there, as were other members of the show’s creative team such as choreographer Wayne Cilento, costume designer Susan Hilferty and music supervisor/arranger Stephen Oremus.

Current stars Alyssa Fox, McKenzie Kurtz, John Dossett, Michelle Pawk, Jordan Litz, Jake Pedersen, Kimber Elayne Sprawl and William Youmans.

WickedMonday’s anniversary performance rounded out a weekend of events honoring the show.

The party started with a performance Good morning America Friday. The next day, the breeze outside the Gershwin Theater turned into “Wicked Day Block Party” featuring exclusive photos, music by DJ Mike Borowski and activations with 20th anniversary partners such as Hershey’s, Shake Shack, Catch ‘N Cream, TodayTix, New York City Parks Department, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Audience Rewards, Scenery Bags and more.

The two Sunday plays were themed around Glinda and Elphaba. Fans who attended the “Pink Performance” matinee were able to take home exclusive pink merchandise, a commemorative button, a signed card and a collectible item. Playroom. “Green performance” at 8 p.m. presented the same gifts but themed around the color green.

Ahead of Monday night’s anniversary performance, New York officially became the Emerald City when the Empire State Building was lit up green to commemorate the musical’s two decades of success.

Wicked tells the story of witches popularized in the Wizard from Oz, but from their perspective. The play is currently the 4th longest running play in Broadway history, behind Lion King, Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera.

Since opening, Wicked was performed in more than 100 cities in 16 countries worldwide, grossing more than $5 billion in global sales. It was seen by almost 65 million people worldwide.

Songs like “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “The Wizard and I” have become part of the pop culture lexicon.

The film version of the musical, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, will be split into two parts. The former is set to debut in theaters on November 27, 2024.

Catching up with PEOPLE in 2018 in honor WickedOn the occasion of the 15th anniversary, Chenoweth and Menzel reflected that they fell in love with the series from the beginning.

“It was a perfect fit right from the start!” Chenoweth said. “Very few times in our careers do we have a hand-in-glove moment, and Glinda was mine. I just thought when I read it, ‘This is my part! And if anyone else plays Glinda, I’m going to kill them in their sleep!’ [laughs].”

“I remember I had to learn ‘Defying Gravity’ for my callback, and I started studying at home and I cried to my e-husband, who was working on it with me at the time,” Menzel recalled. “I really, really wanted it. I would get goosebumps when the music and intro started! I had no idea what it was going to be, but I knew it was something special. I needed this role to teach me something about life that needs to be taught.”
