Before Thursday’s premiere, Shatner told PEOPLE that promoting the project was “a little awkward,” explaining, “It’s a documentary about me and I’m expected to help sell it by going out and talking about me, and I don’t like you talking about me.” “When you’re talking to the press, you can be a little sneaky about how you feel and what you’re doing and what you’re thinking and ‘Oh, yeah, I love that person,’ or ‘I was wrong,’” he told PEOPLE. “But making a serious film that ends up being seen by my children and my children’s children, I didn’t want to be cheesy or fringe about any of the answers.”

“I gave what I hoped was what I truly felt and the masks came off,” the actor added. “So I’m somewhat naked there – a mixed metaphor, if you will. And so the film is more true and more about me than I can, or as much as I can, but it’s a little awkward. It’s like undressing.”

Shatner said Diversity ahead of its March 2023 premiere at SWSX that the documentary also serves as a “way to reach out” to his loved ones after he dies.

“I’ve turned down many offers to make documentaries before. But I don’t have long to live,” he explained. “Whether I’m stuck talking to you or 10 years from now, my time is limited, so that’s a big factor.”

“The sad thing is that a person gets older, gets wiser and then dies with all that knowledge. And it’s gone,” he explained.
