William Shatner’s Simple Secret for Being ‘Energetic’ at 93: ‘Stay Curious’ (Exclusive)

William Shatner reveals how he’s staying “energetic” into his 90s.

In a conversation with LJUDI at the premiere of his documentary You can call me Bill at The Culver Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday, the actor – who celebrates his 93rd birthday on Friday – shared what helps him stay young and engaged in his work.

“Just staying involved in life, staying curious. But happiness has a lot to do with your health,” Shatner tells PEOPLE. “Your life energy, the soul energy of your body, is a product of health. If you’re sick, you can’t be energetic. You die. be healthy.”

The actor also said there is someone close to him who is also responsible for his youthful energy, telling PEOPLE that person is “my wife.”

Shatner was married to Elizabeth Martin from 2001 to 2020, but rumors of a reconciliation began swirling after they attended the Living Legends of Aviation Awards together at The Beverly Hilton on January 20, 2023 in California. Then he spoke to Mirror at the event, stating, “My wife … she’s the spark of life. She brings the flavor.”

Meanwhile, at Thursday’s premiere, Shatner also revealed he’s feeling pretty relaxed about celebrating his latest trip around the sun.

“Well, birthdays are supposed to be a big day. I guess there’s a reason someone out there is celebrating, ‘Oh my God, 93.’ “, he says and adds, “I’m not bragging about it”.

The actor also said that he had previously turned down an offer to make a documentary about his life.

“Well, for years I was asked to make a film like this, and I refused. It seems so killer, as if this is your biography and goodbye”, he says and adds that then the opportunity to collaborate with the production company Legion M appeared.

He continues: “And Alexandre Philippe was a really wonderful artist. So the combination of this very imaginative way of making a film and this wonderful artist, and I thought, it’s time to tell my children the best I can.”

The documentary, directed by Philippe, chronicles Shatner’s decades-long career, including life after his famous role in Star Trek. He is, of course, the widely known Captain James T. Kirk from the popular TV show. On Thursday, he added that the new film allowed him to create a “legacy” for his children.

“So this was a wonderful device to leave my legacy, I hate that word, to leave my memory on film to them and to those who come after me,” he says.

Shatner has three daughters Leslie (65), Lisabeth (62) and Melanie (59) with his wife Gloria Rand (90), with whom he was married from 1956 to 1969.

If his children had seen the film before the premiere, the actor revealed that they had not and explained how he felt about their reaction the first time.

“I was nervous about it because it’s so personal. I don’t know how to deal with it. He asked me a question and it’s all about me, so I had to say, ‘Yeah, wasn’t I wonderful?'” he says, adding: “But she encouraged me the ability to talk to my children.”
