Wizards of Waverly Place’s David Henrie Dishes on a 'Great Dinner' with Selena Gomez and Boyfriend Benny Blanco

Selena Gomez Wizards of Waverly Place movie brother David Henrie put his stamp on Gomez’s boyfriend Benny Blanco.

Henrie, 35, and wife Maria Cahill joined Gomez, 32, and Blanc (real name Benjamin Joseph Levin) for a “great dinner” of Italian food as their first date.

“He can order good food. He can order very good food,” Henrie recently told E! News of the renowned music producer. But Blanco, 36, has also built quite the culinary reputation, from creating delicious meals for friends and family to hosting his previous cooking shows like Eat outside of America and his debut cookbook, Wide Open: A Cookbook for Friends.

“He’s super funny. I was shooting the whole time,” Henrie said, adding that Blanco is “such a nice guy.”

“I trust Selena and I want her to be very happy,” he said How I met your motherr alum admitted. “She knows I have her back.”

Although they met as teenagers playing siblings Justin and Alex Russo Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez and Henria’s relationship developed as they grew up, he said.

“It was more of a big brother thing growing up, but now we’re all kind of equal,” he told E! News.

The actor revealed that the brother-sister dynamic that audiences can feel while watching the show is the same off-camera. “We really cared about each other,” he said. “I think it’s a wonderful culture to have each other’s backs, to be open. It was wonderful.”

“Selena and I have remained very good friends since the end of the show, and I got married, she became good friends with my wife, we would all get together and have a glass of wine and talk about memories,” he previously told PEOPLE.

“She and my wife actually get along really well. They’re having women-to-women conversations, and I’ll just jump in with a joke or something,” he told E! News.

“Despite all of her tremendous success, her and I, our relationship has just endured through it all because I don’t know, we’re just real with each other,” Henrie told PEOPLE.

“We were both close before any of this started. She knows I’m going to be myself with her and I’m going to be honest and authentic and shoot her,” he continued. “I think there’s a freedom in that that’s hard to come by.”

The couple brought their off-screen friendship back to the screen with the new installment of the series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Justin Russo (Henrie) now lives a normal life outside of the wizarding world. But a new challenge surfaces when his sister Alex Russo (Gomez) introduces him to Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a young wizard who needs Justin’s mentorship.
